I hate it.
if you flipped the stem I would have some love for it.
but again my hate for riser stems and pursuit bars wins out.
is it single speed ?

My folding SS.

I'll get this out of the way first:
1) not a fixie
2) not pretending to be a messenger

I got this bike so I could have something to ride when I travel to my favourite Cuban beach resort, ie where the roads are flat, but not well maintained, with lots of patches of flour-like sand.

An entire chain of half links.

My first SS conversion. It's not perfect/finished, but I like it and it rides great and that was my goal.

How I got it off craigslist for $10:

Stripped and cleaned:

She is all of that...

She's a 1987 Kuwahara Cascade touring mtb with a quad butted and lugged Ishiwata frame... she came to me as a gearie, spent a winter as an SS, and for this year (and forever) she will be a fixed gear.

I weighed her with all my kit and the scale read 42 pounds and that was without having the thermos full of chai...which is something a bike needs when it's -20 C and the roads are covered in ice and snow.

104 studs in th front tire also help.

It runs a 38 (Biopace) with 175 mm cranks for maximum torque and has a 16 tooth rear cog to give it a fairly low gearing but still high enough to keep me from spinning out and keep up a decent speed on the road.

You sir are a badas.s for commuting in weather like that.

What's with the chain on the folder? I like the bike, just curious about the chain?

Actually KMC makes a half-link chain. Theyre used for bmx purposes. But are great for fixies.

I have one on my Andre Bertin. Connected to a Miche Hub to a Sugino 75 Crank & Ring

the KMC half-link chain is called the pintle. it's nice, but the shadow chain is nicer for bmx/park stuff. also, the KMC's masterlink system is just a pin with a cotter, which is kind of strange. for FG purposes though, either chain is okay.

are there any advantages or disadvantages for running that half link chain?

I think the same way. At first I wasnt going for good looks, but I'm very happy with the final result.

I think it's a combination of narrow, uncrowded handlebars and 24" fat tires. It gives it a motorcyclish look.

It's great if you have short horizontal dropouts or verticle ones as it easy to adjust to get snug chains. I didn't like mine, it's really heavy and noisy and not the smoothest chain. The links on mine were stiff and no amount of riding and lube helped.

Is anyone going to comment on the dragon head in the background?! Either you are getting ready for chinese new year early or Beowulf rides bikes on his days off!

it's not a dragon, it's a lion.

br995 12-01-07 11:30 AM

What the hell kind of lion is that?

It's fixed/free.

Believe it or not the stem is actually in low mode. I think the angle of the shot and the lens width made it look wonky.
