me fixed gearing down some steep stuff

lridearch 08-22-08 11:18 AM

my first build ever, so go easy on me. I have ridden geared bikes for a year or two, but i caught the fixed gear bug from a friend...i love vintage bikes and went searching for a vintage frame to build on.

I bought a 1968 crescent frame off CL for $40, pretty beefy steel, but not quite gas-pipe, but with nice campy 1010 dropouts and the thinnest seat stays I have ever seen, and this weird 13/16 seat post. Its not a "Pepita Special"...def not 531 tubing, and it has some weird lugs (non-nervex) but covered with cool Swedish words like "VARLDSMASTARCYKELN" (im pretty sure this means i have the best bike in the world. it says so!). Because of the lack of decals available and the labor involved, I decided to preserve the patina of the frame with a clearcoat instead of refinishing and re-decaling. Its a flip-flop with a 48/15 on the track side and a 16t freewheel on the other.

Here she is:

this was pre-seat and stem adjustment....seat came down a little, stem more so...i hadnt greased them yet and was hesitant to cram them all the way in and ruin my nice black finish. trust me, it fits now, and it rides like a champ. im 6'-1, with longish legs, and this 58cm frame fits me better than anything i have ridden on....the weird shallow rake and seat tube angles make for an interesting dynamic.

VARLDSMASTARCYKELN means the bike of a world champion! I really like those. The steering is usually really fast and a very compliant ride. Congrats to a very nice bike.

Looks pretty good for one of there "themed" bikes...My "New York" looks nothing like it did when I brought it home. Nothing original remains but the frame. I have a thing for "Taxied" up customs, whether it be Harleys or cars...guess I like yellow and checker/chess boards mixed together. Go figure....

Have fun with it...

seems like a really strange candidate for carbon fork.
and are those ultegra/105/tiagra external BB cranks?

Dannihilator 08-22-08 08:17 PM

Strange is one of my goals for this build. They are external ultegra cranks, which is strange for a 38 year old frame(1970 Raleigh Record.)

Had a steel track fork laying around that I was going to use on the Raleigh, but decided to put it on my other fixed gear. Also had a set of 3 piece ultegra cranks laying for the raliegh, but decided to put those on my other fixed gear as well.

My other fixed gear:

Nice variation of the Superbe gruppo'd 2.8s still around. Why couldn't Cannondale do this for the 2K?

thanks for the compliment. I also wonder why the new cannondales arent anywhere near the quality of the originals

it came with a weird seatpost and clamp, 13/16 (.833) and its the only way it fits on. i would love to find a replacement seatpost and clamp (in black of course)...seems to be a BMX part...
