Ive been looking at fixed and singlespeed bikes on the web.
Thought Id build a single speed. Well I tried to get a fixed hub, but there too expensive. http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2...whirlwind2.jpg http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2...whirlwind1.jpg Its an old Elswick Hopper from the early 70s I think I was given it by the bike shop. I junked all the rusty steel parts. I put an SR aero stem with upturned cut down bars. CLB aero levers with Weimman 500 calipers SR Silstar cranks had 50 and 40 tooth. The big ring had corroded teeth so I cut off all the teeth. The ring is part of the crank. Only the inner ring is removable. I filed it smooth so its now a chainguard. Its 40 to 16 with a 27" wheel. 67" gearing. Im not too fit and its hilly here I built up a 27" chrome steel rim onto a Maillaird rim. It was a 5 speed deraileur hub. I fitted the spacers to the non drive side. Dished it the other side from normal. Left the frame at its original width. I sanded and polished all the alloy parts. Apart from the lever blades. Have to do them. Its a badge engineered Raleigh. So has there threading. I recut the BB shell as the cups were worn. I fitted a pair of steel mudguards from a Royal Enfeild bike I got for spares. The bike originally had 26X1 1/4" wheels and 27" are tight fit in the mudguards. Im wanting to mount a dynamo onto the lamp bracket on the forks. But the guard is a bit low for the roller to get the tyre. Might cut out the guard. |
i dig the raleigh beater

Too much handlebar craziness on the orange bike. Can't get behind that.
Sounds like you did alot to make the bike how you want it though, so enjoy it :) |
isn't it a bit cruel to use a cat to prop up your bike?

looks good! now I'm waiting for some hauling pics! ;)

Haha, will do. You're bike and hauling threads were my inspiration to build this bike. The only thing I want to change is the stem, handlebars, and possibly fork.
I've hauled my sister, a lot of groceries, and a heavy gym bag. :thumb: |
