you can have your bike stolen but it is very rare. don't let the cops see you and they are used to people jumping on bikes and riding away. just make sure it is yours.

Thanks for the simple answer i wanted. i heard its very common for little things like umbrellas and hats and such left on a subway to be returned, etc. but the fact that you can leave something like a rare and expensive bicycle unlocked and unattended is, to me, an amazing and beautiful thing. it's certainly not something you find almost anywhere else in the world and says a lot about the values we learn as kids.

Ceya 06-30-06 08:25 PM

umbrellas are so common that they are every where. they clean up at the last stop and take everything out. if they find anything they will hold on to it. you can drop a wallet with a thousand dollars you will get it back.

very respectful place and honor is still there.

haha maybe someday. the other bike is getting a little rediculous, but in its own dignified way. i do not want attention when I ride. I just want to be another person on a bicycle.

why 2?

Renz 07-01-06 02:25 AM

In Tokyo a wallet dropped on the street has a very good chance of still being there when the owner comes back the next day looking for it, but no such luck for umbrellas. I've lost count the amount of times I've bought a new shiny, sexy, translucent umbrella and have had it stolen within 5 mins of use. I've heard the same thing goes for bikes, they're public property like umbrellas... but maybe only for those generic grocery run models. Anything so obviously personalized/gaudy are left alone.

^^^ Hahh, opposite of the rest of the world... Funny

were you there as a service member? maybe i didn't know the right neighborhoods, but as a civilian with short hair (and told i looked like a GI), i got bad vibes a lot of places. plenty of honor, sure... but a dose of "**** you, gaijin" along with that. no matter how much i sumimasen-ed my way around.

i like how in one of the tokyo photos (with the guy straddling his bike) he has a lock and chain silk-screened onto his shirt.

edit: I wonder if that is poking fun at our culture and how it's a necessity for us to wear a lock and chain?!

they loved me when i was in japan, but i definately felt like an outsider. i kind of enjoyed that though. i dont look very military-esque tho, for sure.

plus I figure with how cheap they were might as well get two I am hard on parts and should one break (like right now the green one has a stripped hub ) so I ride the other

I am hard on parts it is a comdination of weight and strength I am 6'4" and weight about 235# and the cheap stock hubs aren't cutting the mustard

but next month I get my new wheels hopefully they will last me a while
