I spy a Nitto stem, but that's all I got.

chrisj 11-23-04 10:11 PM

I built this bike up tonight - i've got some work left to do on the frame, but I had to take it for a spin.

1957 Schwinn American frame with Nitto bars and a Coaster Brake Wheel from nycbikes.com. The tires are Vittoria Pro-Team Kevlar. The Seat sucks.

adamkell 11-23-04 10:15 PM

that is amazing

dirtydan 11-23-04 10:17 PM

hey adam, dont you have another pursuit bike? Used to be your avatar? Maybe its not you, but the yamaguchi is hot!

schwinnbikelove 11-23-04 10:18 PM

Holy crap! I love you! My '58 American should be a few pages back...

You must've bent/removed the rear fender brace to get the rear wheel in? I was going to put my fixed wheels (700c) on it, but didn't feel like tinkering, so I opted for my MTB rims instead (coaster).

schwinnbikelove 11-23-04 10:20 PM

By the way, keep us updated about that rear wheel. I know I was eyeing it up on eBay.

chrisj 11-23-04 10:39 PM

Didn't take much bending, I took a risk and went for that wheelset and luckily it fit alright. Took the fender off without a hitch.

schwinnbikelove - I check out your bike - the style of these frames are really classic and beautiful.

Wow -- what a hot bike. The overall effect sorta reminds me of the Harley Davidson bikes ... er, motorcycles ... from the late 30s and early 40s, particularly the stripped-down racers. It's all about that reverse-wedge shape with the frame dropping away in a big arc from the headset to the rear hub.

What a cool combination of old iron and new purpose. How's it ride, I wonder? It must turn some heads...

SSenorPedro 11-24-04 12:19 AM

When I used to live up by Bellingham, WA the owner of the LBS had a 40's Schwinn Excelsior that he built up fixed with Campy track hubs on tubular rims, vintage skip-tooth crank, lugged stem, and flat bar.

Very sexy in an idiosynchronous way. I rode it several times; comfy, smooth, and interesting.

Und Oktober - Ride sometime?

When I rode it last night I kept on comparing it to my track bike, so my score for performance was pretty low. The frame is really heavy, but it chugs along with minor issues. The seat swivels up at the top of the seatpost and I need to clean up the headset. Besides that I love the bike, though I think I enjoyed building it more.

Watch your back, buck-o.

So I just happened to be looking at my bike today while I was putting the trash cans away and noticed that it does have a pretty tight wheelbase. In fact, I wasn't so sure it wasn't about the same size as that Yamaguchi, so I decided to take some photos and compare. The results are interesting (see the full image for markers).

adamkell, you're off the hook for now, just watch it, ok?

coincidence? i think not...

it looks like the tightness mostly comes from the rear triangle - the clearance between the front wheel and the down tube looks downright normal. do you get any toe overlap?

bostontrevor 11-24-04 04:52 PM

A little bit. But I agree that the front doesn't seem that special, a pretty typical contemporary low-rake fork. I would like some day to swap out for a no-rake straight-blade and see how it plays.

I've had fenders on that bike in the past (for like 3 days) and the rear was a real PITA to keep running properly, the front was nothing special.

day19 11-24-04 06:11 PM

here's a slightly better photo.

that last one was me getting artsy w/ the bike while nursing a broken elbow.
