how's the handling?

funny story. i was actually interested to see if somebody would notice or remember my post from a bit ago about a bent fork/replacement fork question. about four months ago i rear ended a truck who decided to stop again after rolling away from a four way stop. conveniently, once he started to roll the first time, i looked back to check on my girlfriend who was on the maiden voyage with her conversion. BAM. i hit it square and the fork is bent straight back a bit.

no problems -- still tracks straight. i double checked with a local frame builder that seems to think i'm not pushing my luck safety wise. VOILA, my IRO now has more track-like geometry and some toe overlap that took some getting used to when i was using eggbeaters. oddly enough, i like the ride/handling now more than ever but i would like to find a replacement fork with similar rake just for some peace of mind.

The Brooks actually looks alright to me. English bike + Brooks = no brainer.

If it had been chopped to match the raciness of the cockpit, it would be better. But yeah, your ass covers the seat when you ride anyway, so you may as well cover your ass and get the seat that makes you comfortable.

Tiawanese bike + Brooks =

You know what I mean...it's your bike.

Besides, I take "English" or British to mean a cultural asthetic. Great Britan held many exotic colonies. It's not all tea and crumpets, y'know.

Raleigh + Brooks= what's not to love.

Would a Selle Italia look better? Let's stop hating on Taiwan this year, m'kay everybody?

...or at least learn to spell it correctly.

Do you live in an urban area? My various bikes get people to ask questions, but it's usually something to the effect of "Soooo...what's the point?" or "Are we both crazy or is it just you not riding with brakes?". I've gotten a few people to convert, but very few of the college students actually ride, let alone see anything other than "old 10 speeds or a crappy mountain bike" as within their means.

^^^ I'm usually faced with questions like "what about hills?" or "why?"

Yeah most people still do think you're insane, but I think with the higher profile fixed gears have at the moment (especially as I'm in a major city) more people are curious since they've seen some about town and heard some stories about what it's like to ride one and how low maintenance they are, but they dont know where to start. When they see mine they get the chance to get some proper information about it, and I get a chance to talk about fixed gear riding for ages so it's win-win! To be honest I dont really mind If people just want to stick with their crap mountain bikes, as long as more people are on bikes I'm happy.

EDIT

My bike! Just got it today. Ultra crappy picture, and completely stock except ****ty pedals, but I don't care because I'm excited!

Even has the reflectors still =).

phoenix 01-09-07 12:14 AM

Looks like a 57? Ditch the reflectors and rock it son!

Tully 01-09-07 12:18 AM

Certainly is a 57 yo, and it has been rocked all day, hard! Now will come the fine tuning and reflector removal and ****.

Riding fixed has shown me just how much my SPD's suck, they are fine on my road bike but reaaalyy noticably ass on this fellah.

This picture justifies me selling my Work RSZ-R's off my car to get that HED3 cf wheel.

if you're gonna lose the stem, i strongly suggest that you replace it with a different one, lest you experience some mechanical difficulties.
