if anyone on here's from boston, and knows b-fresh, ask him about my skitching stories from when I was living in boston. http://www.digave.com/images/page_home.jpg |

Well, my winter project is finally complete. I'm quite happy with how it turned out and I took some pictures of it this afternoon. It took me around five months to get all the parts, paint it, and built it. This was my first complete build and I can't believe how much I learned about parts and bicycle mechanics in the process. Thanks to many of you for answering my questions along the way. A lot of fun to ride and the gearing is nice for cruising.
An old, tired, abandoned road bike: http://farm1.static.flickr.com/169/4...581fdb72f2.jpg The finished bicycle against a tree: http://farm1.static.flickr.com/183/4...432e6ca03a.jpg The finished bicycle against a bush: http://farm1.static.flickr.com/170/4...b887f086c6.jpg This is my new rain bike and I have full fenders for it. Due to its intended use, and since I'm a big fan of Prince (we have the same date of birth) it will be known as Purple Rain. |

nice looking bike. what was the painting process like?
|
The painting process was fun, but took a pretty long time. I actually asked another forum member a lot of questions - his bike painting pics and tutorial are linked in the DIY thread.
I used rattle cans. Stripped the frame clean, filed off cable guides, sanded it down, steel wooled it as well. Cleaned it with lacquer thinner, put on primer, put on a numerous coats of paint, then a sparkle coat (looks great in person, tough to capture in photos) and then some clear coats. Waited a fair amount of time in between to allow the paint to dry. It looks great, but the paint doesn't seem to have adhered to the primer. After all the time and a fair amount of money it is really annoying that the paint flakes off if you touch it with a wrench or lean it against anything. I have emailed the company (Duplicolor) and am going to see if they will do something for me, as I followed their directions verbatim and the product definitely failed to meet even low expectations. Looks great, but flakes off. Thanks for the help and compliments Jesse! Tough to see, but the saddle is a light blue color with a cross pattern of white. Matches the tires pretty well. |

Thanks, Mander! Yeah, the paint problem is annoying, but I wanted the build to be all of my own work, which is why I decided against getting it powdercoated. I'm going to see how it holds up over the summer and if it gets too screwed up I'll get it professionally painted in the fall.
I got some SKS fenders and I'll snap a pic with them on and post soon. They are silver; I'll keep it a secret from the little many in spandex until I upgrade:) |

The fronts are a little short I find. I have some nos gold SKS on my fg. They are two rear fenders with one modded and cut down to work as an extra long front fender because mudflaps look horrible. It's got an extra ~4" on the bottom and ~1" on the top. It works great. Though it's pretty self explanatory I may someday post a howididit in the DIY thread. |
