Here is my first fixie. It's a early 90's Cannondale 3.0 Criterium frame. Eno rear hub. Campy Record front hub. Open Pro rims. Single Ultegra brake up front. Cinelli bars and stem. Dura Ace Aero seatpost. 105 crankset. Curent gearing is 48x18. I also have a '03 Bianchi Pista for track use but it has not seen any action yet. I am already looking to upgrade that bike.

edit:changed hosting to fix red X silliness.

Kevin Bacon went to my high school, but I wish I was only one degree away from your bike instead.

Schwinn Prologue and a mystery frame that I tossed full fenders on for a rain bike... both well-fixed.

geared to ss in less than 8 hours (with time for errands, dinner and beers ;)).
i picked up this GORGEOUS, early 80's, almost mint, made-in-japan, triple butted fuji today, and just finished converting it to ss.

stripped off all the useless stuff, re-spaced, re-packed, and re-dished the rear wheel, and here you go.

total cost so far: $60 for the bike, $17 for the freewhwheel, $1.00 for axle spacers.
still to do: bar tape, remove the extra chainring, pedals, and new stack bolts.

my first home-made conversion. i'm so proud.

I'm a sucker for a nice schwinn and that certainly is one, I almost creamed my pants when I saw that one...then I saw the saddle bag and calmed down :D

I think my Schwinn is kinda nice. '78 Paramount 'Team Schwinn.' 531. Nervex lugs. Wasn't sure how the carbon fork, leftover after I busted my '96 Ti bike, would work out, but I like it. Nice contrast between old and new, white and black. At the very least, it's all Reynolds; all red, white and blue. Second pic better shows the sweet 'Team' decal.

'01 SL Pista and '04 Cannondale Track. The cannondale's not really a track bike, but I got a great deal on it last year and it was a good way for me to move away from road bikes. I have a titanium collarbone from a disagreement with an SUV I had while on that bike in November. I just got the Bianchi this weekend. I was out riding until midnight last night trying to get in some riding before today's snow.

I almost cried right now. Beautiful. If it were a Paramount track I would of have to end my life though.

Oh yeah? At least you don't have a name to uphold! All these people with nicer Schwinns than I?

Blasphemy! (on my end or theirs?)

One nice thing about being a Schwinn fan is that they are underappreciated by the general public. There are gems waiting to be found.

Previous owner (not original owner) never built my bike as it was a centimeter or so too small for him. It sat in a trash bag in the corner of the garage for many years till he sold his house and uncluttered.

I don't think the guy recognized the significance of the 'team' decals, thinking it was a Schwinn model, not the decal set used by sponsored teams.

Apart from a nick or two on the stickers, the bike is flawless. The decals have yellowed slightly giving it a very slick and undeniable old school look.

What makes the bike even more special, to me at least, is its connection to Detroit, where I lived prior to moving to LA. Under coach Mike Walden, the Wolverine Sports Club was for decades the dominant amateur cycling club. I never raced while in Detroit, but did take part in many crazy Wolverine club rides. To think that this bike is done up like the 'Schwinn Wolverines' bikes from back in the day...well, I need a moment.

Schwinn fans have likely seen it, but there's a nice bit on Paramount history at the Waterford site. And some stuff on Walden and Detroit in the articles section of FGG.

An early seventies Paramount track bike ... white paint, spaghetti lettering, chrome lugs, pinstriping ... long my dream bike. If I had found that frame for the few dollars I paid for this one, well, I'd of ended it right there.

Detroit's got a proud cycling tradition. Before it was the motor city it was a, if not the, hotbed of American cycling.

http://info.detnews.com/history/stor...egory=business

Scorching was infamous in the city. Cyclists were behind the first stretch of cement paved street in America and the first 3 color traffic light (Woodward and 7 Mile if memory serves--along Woodward at any rate). Detroit was an early adopter of motorcycle cops to, you guessed it, apprehend speeding cyclists.

Can I see a picture of your conversion on the rear hub please?

dolface 02-28-05 08:30 PM

sorry, i JUST took it apart, but it's a shimano ss freewheel on a stock freewheel hub, nothing fancy.

filtersweep 02-28-05 09:12 PM

Yeah.. seatbag... something about being unable to shake my roadie roots... need somewhere to "stash" a flat kit.

The cool thing about Schwinn is that since most people these days think they are Walmart bikes, nobody messes with them. Those that know, generally show a bit of respect.

I still want one of those Pista's, man are they beautiful - where/how did you end up getting it?

I found it on ebay. Some guy from NY built it for racing then inexplicably moved to Idaho, where they have neither velodromes nor interesting cities.

I'd watch out, if I were you. You can only heap so much calumny and slander upon Boise before its ordinarily patient citizens rise up in a great tide of righteous, vengeful anger.

gravityhurts 03-01-05 05:21 PM

Trippy fork, otherwise a smart looking fixer.

I'm sorry, you're right. Boise probably does have a velodrome.
