that is just begging for a white turbo saddle.
|
or begging for its gear to be reinstalled.
|
Ok i went ahead and got most of the decals off so i figured i'd post new pictures of it.
still looking for a saddle... not really sure what i'm going to do there... but i suppose anything would be an improvement... i brought it to a kind of lame bike shop cause i was nearby to have something tightened cause i didnt have the tools on me and i mentioned to the guy that the front brake could stand to stop faster and he suggested replacing the caliper.. saying that old calipers flex and that's making my stopping power less.. but i have the same caliper on my multi speed panasonic from the same era and don thave this problem... maybe i'll just replace the pads... and maybe too i'll post this problem in the appropriate forum ;) anyhow, here's the pics. http://slbradio.org/files/clean1.jpg http://slbradio.org/files/clean2.jpg http://slbradio.org/files/clean3.jpg |
Regarding brake stopping power:
I notice you're using what's called a cross-top lever. These will never be able to provide the amount of pull that a "normal" road brake lever will. And while I'm not sure, the position it's mounted in might be making it even weaker; they're meant to be mounted on the flats of your drop/bullhorn by the stem. You could try switching to a TT bar-end lever and see if that makes a difference. Or, yeah, it could be that your pads are just worn down and in need of replacement. |

jchechile,
the lever is fine, lots of people use cross levers. they may not have the exact same leverage as a road brake lever but if they're set up correctly they'll stop your bike very fast. the caliper may be something you look at upgrading at some point but it should be sufficient to stop the bike. when in doubt i always replace the brake pads. i'm willing to bet that the problem is your cable routing. the curves are too sharp, causing the cable to bind when it should slide freely. to fix this you could mount the lever up by the stem, or just flip it around so that the cable runs along the handlebar. let it curve down the the brake naturally. good luck. |

I dunno...it's not like it's some classic Italian or American (or English for that matter) beauty. Centurions are nice, well made bikes -- I'm partial to mine -- but it doesn't seem blasphemous to convert one.
Also, it was just a frame when I got it, so the fixed gear made a little more sense than if I had stripped off all the vintage components and thrown them away. |
when is someone going to buy a pugsley!
|

two home-made fixed gear bikes by Watercycles in Tokyo
Here are two home-made fixed gears from Watercycles in Tokyo.
the first frame he made was the BMX-y one: http://nathaniel.typepad.com/photos/bikes/dsc_0350.jpg http://nathaniel.typepad.com/photos/bikes/dsc_0353.jpg this is number two: http://nathaniel.typepad.com/photos/bikes/dsc_0330.jpg http://nathaniel.typepad.com/photos/bikes/dsc_0345.jpg .....that Ebisu is nice btw!!! Aren't they US/Bay Area-made though? (Japanese-style to be sure....) |
Pretty sure the headtube is just gonna randomly pop off of one of those home-made deals. Looks pretty neat but id be scared of em.
|
naaah, it should be fine.........in the last pic you can sort of make out the rubber bands holding the head tube on. there were at least three ;)
dude makes some really nice bags out of recycled tires though! |
