Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Okay, so I've been commuting on my old 12 speed for some time and I just recently bought a fixed gear. I wanted to give Clipless pedals a go so I bough Shimano PD R540, and Shimano SPD cleats.

I get the package in the mail install the SPD cleats into my Adidas and get home stoked to ride my bike. One problem... I can't clip in. I must have bough the wrong cleats for my pedals or something. What have I done?

if those are in fact your shoes, you might be restricted to spd type pedals.

unless you can find an adapter that will let you run spd sl cleats on your shoes. i've found a few adapters that go the other way, but none that would work for you.

i'm quoted underneath this post recommending the SIDI adapter, but i was wrong, that's for running spd cleats on spd-sl shoes.

you can get an adapter though:

that plus the correct cleats and you're good to go.
Wait.

We can't tell if the shoes/cleats are compatiable but definitely the pedals/cleats ARE NOT compatiable. Either buy SPD pedals or LOOK-type cleats (and make sure they're compatiable with the shoes.

EDIT: The shoes/cleats ARE compatiable (I see the two slots with the nuts inside the sole) so the issue is that you need to get SPD pedals.

You'll have to buy new pedals. The spd-sl cleats won't fit under your shoes.

Well I could return the shoes and buy a shoe thats SPDSL compatible. Do they make shoes that use SPDSL that you can walk around in? What pedals would you recommend?

in general they're going to be less walkable. you can get cleat covers

https://brandscycle.com/itemdetails.cfm?ID=8769

but they're still not going to be very comfortable. if you do a lot of walking in your bike shoes you might consider getting different pedals, rather than cleats. spd, crank brothers, and time atac type cleats are much better for walking,

Yeah I was looking at the SPD Sl cleats and they looked huge. I guess I'll just get new pedals, now I gotta look around.

The Lake 12X shoes provide a front and rear cleat which allows a fair amount of walkability with Look style cleats

I should probably just send my box back to Nashbar and pick up those lakes because it will probably cost more to buy new pedals.
Which one of these cleats is SPD SL?

Will these cleats fit into the shoe?
