Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

1. Why do you ride FG?
It was fun to rebuild a 1976 Varsity (like I had in 1976) into a functional commuter bike with fenders, rack, panniers and a fixed gear. To ride silently and to feel a bit ahead of the curve

2. What influenced you to do so?
My brother in Colorado talking about it, then reading Sheldon Brown's site, then seeing a Craigslist Varsity for $40 kicked it off. I sent an email to Sheldon asking about removing the sproket and he responded. (October 2007) before he passed away. An amazing soul.

3. What other types of bike have you owned?
Had a Schwinn Lemon Peeler in 1974 (a cool looking but rotten bike), Schwinn Collegiate, Schwinn 1976 Bicentennial Varsity (wish I would have kept it and the lemon peeler), Schwinn World Traveler, Trek613 Touring (still have it), Trek800 MTB, Specicalized Tarmac (rocket!) and my 1976 Varsity Fixie.

I was thinking the same thing...

Just like the mechanic's have their own industry sub forum there could be a sub forum for those who work ON their bikes rather than for those who work on them.

I do both.

And the TdF guys would kick our asses.

Bikes: mountain, cruiser, road, fixie, bmx

1. because fixies are ****ing hip, and fixies allow me to be so unique that i'm really the same as everyone else who has a fixie, and because fixies are well, fixies!

2. the spirit of the fixe influenced me to ride fixies

3. before my fixie i had well nothing because fixies are the only way to ride a bike.

peace out,
<3 ur FIXIE PIXIE!

Gravy indeed.

I come from the era where we were using pagers & payphones (ask me about the nickel trick). I'm happy you enjoyed your first day out. I often think about getting back on the bike for work but I could never make as much as I do shuffling paper now. Congrats on being outside & remember, ride safe!

Werd. Prior to getting my first apartment, I was homeless, sleeping on the subway, riding back & forth with my bike locked to a pole & hugging my bag like it was my significant other. Good times. Good times indeed. I told the one story about how I survived a popped chain going down 5th ave between 2 busses & got laughed at on here.

They don't know what living is.

Bikes: I have cut my stable down to one bike in hopes to make room for a roadie.

1. After rebuilding bikes for the past 4+ years I started realizing that freewheel/geared bikes are just too ****ing complex and require a load of maintenance, and I was only using about 2% of my gearing when riding on my normal routes. So I made my first conversion and turned the corner.
2. See Above.
3) I got my first bike when I was five (a kids/bmx/dirt x-mart thing). When I was about 12 I worked an entire summer for my dad at $2 an hour to save up money to get a new bike. We went out and I picked out a 15 speed MTB. I cherished that bike and taught myself how to tune it and do regular maintenance. I then got away from biking for awhile when I turned 16 because I had the freedom to drive. Finally, when I came to college I needed a cheap and easy way to commute so I picked up a 80's schwinn World Sport. I rebuilt it completely and made sure everything was road worthy, then it got stolen. My dad picked me up a cheap-o MTB to replace it, but I hated it and only road it a few times before I got a free MTB and stripped it out into my first fixed gear. This summer I bought several bike at fleamarkets and yardsales, stripped them and mix and matched parts and sold a large majority of them. I currently ride a Raleigh Frame that I picked up for free from my LBS with some Campy cranks. That's my nice weather bike. I ride my GF's mongoose dx pro MTB for the winter beater.

1. I ride it cause it's fun, it's awesome going down hills and seeing how fast I can spin, and also trying not to die when doing so.
2. I saw an interview of some bmx dude who rode fixed gears a while back and thought "wow, that sounds like the craziest thing ever, you never stop pedaling?"
3. I've had bmx bikes and mountain bikes, but I'd rather like to get a cross bike.

Bikes: 07 Pinarello

1. its fun because its a little bit more challenging than riding most other bikes, you have to pay some attention to what you're doing. i've only been riding it for about a month but i'm liking it a lot.
2. i have ridden every other type of bike, except a recumbent, and wanted to give it a try and i had also just moved into a flat city from the suburbs so it seemed like as good a time as any.
3. 3 bmx, 1 POS mtb, 1 flat bar pinarello, 1 triathalon bike.

1. Sheer ease of riding: don't have to think about changing gears or damaging gears, fewer moving parts to wear out, no derailleur voodoo. FG and track bikes are simpler and prettier than road bikes, mostly.

2. In 2004, I wanted a big BMX bike for commuting so I bought a C'dale 1FG MTB. It wasn't quite what I had in mind, but it was okay. I started riding road bikes pretty religiously in '05, and eventually got tired of fixing my derailleurs all the time, and wanted to try something new. I saw a photo of a Fuji Obey on a blog in early '08, knew I had to have one, and got started on the fixed.

3. A Redline BMX, C'dale and Schwinn MTBs, an awful C'dale hybrid, a C'dale road bike. Now I'm down to two bikes (Fuji Obey for track and Orbea Opal for road), and I'm building up a C'dale R1000 as a FG commuter.
