Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Why would you want to run a crankset with two chainrings (unless you run the outer one with an obnoxious ratio, or hack it off and run the inside one making the whole thing look terrible)?

I would rather have a cheap-o bulletproof crankset. or the above mentioned ebay set. Anything designed for a single speed setup.

This thread is nothing more than people stating to get what they have because they believe it to be the best, with most likely NO other experience with the other mentioned cranksets. I say this because I am guilty of it as well.

OP- plainly, there is no "best" crankset.

Not sure about the "obnoxious ratio" comment, with 130 bcd you can run between 39T and 56T chainrings from most manufacturers, I imagine somewhere in between there you can find one that works...

I've seen plenty of 165 road cranks for sale, including 600s, but, yes, 170s do appear to be more common. I use 170s on a conversion and pedal strike is not a serious issue.

Many cheap SS cranks are actually road (double) cranks sold with only a single ring. You can run one chainring on any crank, and there are plenty of chainring sizes available to obtain whatever gear ratio you want. Please get a clue.

When i ran the original road cranks that came on my bike, i had two choices. run the outer chainring of 52 or w.e teeth, or the inner one with 40 teeth. If you wanted to run the outer, you could simply unbolt the inner and that would be fine. If you wanted to run the inner, the only way to remove the outer chainring was to cut it off. I dont know if thats the case with all road cranks, apparently not, but that's what I thought. So all you assh*oles can stop being d1ckheads. this forum is unreal.

No one is saying to run two chainrings. The "obnoxious ratio" is total bs too, you can always just get another cog to make it less "obnoxious". Plus many cranksets on ebay don't even come with chainrings. I know my shimano 600s didn't. Hell, my pista even came with the RDs which can hold two chainrings.

OMFG LOOK HOW OBNOXIOUS MY RATIO IS WITH SHIMANO 600 ROAD CRANKS

$40 bucks shipped to my house. They ride great and look good as well.

EDIT: oops, took too long. everyone else has it covered lol

im running square taper 105's that cost me a whopping $20. 167.5 length. i run the chain ring on the inside, and my chain line is straight. my "crappy conversion" of a schwinn world is solid, and rides as good as most of my friends bikes with dedicated "track" frames. its not necessarliy all the parts you put on the bike, but the way that they are put together. if you put some 75's on there with the zen messenger ring, but install it incorrectly, don't torque it down right, it will be just as noisy as any other crappy build. don't stress about the parts that are on your bike, but make sure those parts are put on that bike CORRECTLY.

Dude, this in an internet forum. We thrive on insulting each other. Its all part of the fun. The useful information gets through somehow. No one really hates you for being mistaken about road cranks. We all started out with zero knowledge.

There's no way I'd spring for 75s on a trick bike. They're going to break sooner rather than later, why waste the $$$?

I did. It can be even a little more if you get a black 75. Later on another bike I bought a Alien crank set and a FSA chain ring and realized that the quality was just the same. I love the Alien. Both are 144BCD. Alien = Andel. I think you can spend the money you waste on expensive cranks on something else for your bike.
