Other than Bianchi Who Makes Chrome Frames?

Other than the Bianchi Pista who offers a chrome frame? I searched on it but all the threads I found have to do with working on vintage frames or something.

Thanks

Chris

You can buy a Schwinn Madison and strip it, like another user did. It's all chrome underneath the paint.

I have a chrome Jury as my commuter, BTW. I really like it, but I'm not sure it makes sense for people who don't want to run fenders, fatties, etc.

+1. You should be able to do this with any cro-moly frame.

Question. Once the paint is stripped, is there a need to use something to protect/preserve the chrome?

Oh. In that case, disregard that. But what makes the Madison cro-moly different from non-Maddy cro-moly?

Yeah, not every cro-moly frame is like that.

But, you can strip a frame down to raw steel and clearcoat it a few times, which I think looks good.

Cro-moly refers the alloy of the steel. It's a type of steel that has small amount of chromium and molybdenum in it.

The Madison is "chromed" (chrome plated). This means there is a thin layer of chromium electrically plated on the outside of the steel to protect it from rust.

If you stripped a non-chromed crmo frame, it would quickly rust.

Almost any British frame builder would do you a full chrome frame. But it would be more expensive than the other options that have been put forward. Mercian frames start at about 400 pounds. Bob Jackson and Woodrup start lower.

@hagisan

You don't have to do anything, but clearcoating the chrome would help protect it.

clearcoating doesnt stick well to chrome. Regular waxing is better

If you have a frame you like it is entirely possible to have it chromed. I have seen frames that were taken to a shop here in Sacramento that chromes auto bumpers and mostly automotive parts. These frames were absolutely beautiful with a deep almost blueish chrome color. I believe they ran in the $200. range for a complete chrome. Might be worth calling around and see what a plating company charges. Another tip: if getting a frame sand blasted or powder coated, find out when they are running a color you like and have them add your frame...it saved me about half as the setup was easier.

In line with having a frame you like chromed, one of the instructors at United Bicycle Institute in Ashland, Oregon, had his/her fixed gear bike nickel-plated.

It looked beautiful.

Nickel plate doesn't have the same highly-reflective bluishness of chrome, and looks softer and more lustrous, and more grayish than bluish.

Also, nickel won't take the beating that chrome will take, but nickel does better than powdercoat or conventional paint in terms of durability.

The new base Specialized Langster is chrome, as was the '06 or '07 model of the Cannondale Capo.
