Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

it's the fact that the lever is on the top and the only place to grab the top of those bars is curved. i personally would not want to grab that curved portion for extended periods.

basically i just think the shape of those bars is stupid

i NEVER ride on the tops of my bars so it would really be no different. ive only needed the brake for one emergency stop but i found it very fast despite being on the "front" of the bars

how do you guys secure your handlebar and headset so no one can steal it when you lock your bike up?

mine looks easy to take apart. just a hex and a few spin and you got yourself a handlebar/headset.. btw, theres no brakes on my bike, its a fixie.

First single speed project

1996 Trek 820 17" Frame
Chromoly main tubes

Trek fork - Chromoly

Shimano Deore DX cranks

ODYSSEY Jim Cielencki magnesium bmx pedals

Specialized Fuse bmx stem

1" threaded to 1 1/8" threadless stem adapter

Redline cruiser bars 5.5" rise and 27.5" width

Redline grips

Tektro brake lever with Shimano cantilever brakes.

Deore DX rear derailleur used as a chain tensioner for single speed.
I haven't gotten a single speed conversion kit yet and I also wanted to make sure I like it before totally switching over.

fixed gear = front brake + foot retention

single speed = both brakes

edit: i should have clarified, this is what i think should be considered MINIMUM braking equipment

a single speed with no front brake doesnt seem like a real great idea

Doesn't a single speed speak for itself? I mean, why does a single speed have to have a front and rear brake? I thought single speed was a bike with one speed and a freewheel vs fixed gear being a bike with a coaster brake.

A fixed-gear bicycle (or fixed wheel bicycle) is a bicycle that has no freewheel, meaning it cannot coast — the pedals are always in motion when the bicycle is moving.

A single-speed bicycle is a type of bicycle with a single gear ratio. These bicycles are without derailleur gears, hub gearing or other methods for varying the gear ratio of the bicycle.

But lawdly, where do you get a pristine condition coaster hub that's so shiny and purtty?

I happened to have a wheel laying around with this hub in it, so...

And no, it is not a fixie but a SS.

I believe coaster brake and fixed gear are totally different mechanisms.

Hooray for good weather!

Boo for hangovers. Went for a relatively short and flat ride, and I still felt like I was going to DIE.

Don't know why I'm posting a picture again... nothing new on the bike. I just liked this shot of it.

due to the laws of physics, when you brake, weight is shifted forward reducing the effect of the rear brake. this is why cars and trucks generally have much larger brakes on the front, why Campagnolo uses dual pivot on the front and single on the rear, and why motorcycles have two front brakes and one rear.

i think most studies show that front brakes make up something like 70% of braking capacity. (depending on the "vehicle")

if you are going to sell your braking ability short by only running one brake, why not keep the more important of the two?
