Did anyone actually ride in these and have anything to report back?

Yeah a friend of mine who doesn't even own a bike (but knows I ride a lot) sent me the link today.

I almost started in explaining to him why these things are useless, but I figured it wasn't worth it.

If they were clipless, I'd have ordered a pair on the spot.

I bought a pair of the low tops a month ago and I love them. They're stiff enough for riding, allowing you to pedal hard with out too much bend. They also have metal tipped laces so they won't fray or get caught in the chain. Hope that helps...

That's kinda how I feel, but I saw an ad for these and it occurred to be I still hadn't seen any input from someone who'd actually put them through the ringer. I'll keep an open mind, and I'm sure for some people who really dig clips, these may fit the bill.

But really, what's so hard about making a decent clipless shoe that doesn't look like something out of Buck Rogers? There are a handful of not-so-gaudy shoes, but this has to be an under-tapped market. On the other hand, if it's going to work off the bike, the cleat needs to be adequately recessed, and maybe that=goofy no matter what.

I won a pair of the mid tops, I don't like em much. They're a bit tricky to pull out of my straps, but they seem pretty durable. No way I'd pay $90 for them

I've got the high tops. Better grip than the Sambas (I don't ride w/toe clips), and they keep my feet relatively warm and dry in the rain. Comfortable to walk in as well, though I mainly use them for riding. I've got a made-in-USA pair of low-top All Stars, but my feet must be getting old, because they aren't as comfortable to walk in as they used to be.

if they are even decently water resistant than the shoe has some good potential for winter riding. Regardless of how lame they look, they are better than wet shoes or rain boots. And if the sole is hardened too, at least they tried.

Tricky to pull out b/c of the grip up front? Seems pretty poor design if they don't even work w/ clips. Then again, they may be shooting for folks who ride platforms w/o clips.

I've found the same. I used to love Chucks, but trying them more recently I found my feet just hurt. I don't know if it was a matter of getting older or just having known any better.

I've had my low-tops for almost 2 months now and ride in them regularly.

Pro: Stiff, narrow, padded, comfortable, many positive comments regarding the way they look from strangers

Con: Don't get wet, the cordura takes days to dry and they are not waterproof at all it seems. And trying to flip the pedal around and get in the clips while they're wet is tedious, it's just a big slippery annoying mess (mks pedals w/out those useful tabs other pedals have).

might be my fault: the laces got wrapped around the pedal spindle last week, that sucked

Verdict: I like them, except when it's raining

Some simple spray on water proofer will make them water proof.

you gotta tuck your laces in. you'll regret it when they get caught in your drive train.

They have "gates" for the laces, which don't provide enough tension to keep them from flopping out sometimes.. like when you're drunk and can't get your foot in the clips because you're an idiot.

Bikes: Bianchi San Jose, fixed

I got to ride around in the rain in the Kursk shoes yesterday and today.
Overall, they sucked.
They we're highly water resistant though, and didn't just absorb all the water.
however after just one day they reaked to high heaven, I have shoes that have been riddin in longer and in fouler conditions that don't smell near as bad.

The shoes were also highly uncomfortable, especially to walk in.
I think it's in part to the fact that they decided to end the fiberglass mid sole right under the ball of the foot. It makes it do neither job well.
The other reason is the heel cup, why on earth would anyone need a heel that stiff on a low cut shoe. seriously the heel had zero play.
Both my heels have blisters.

And before someone says they were designed to ride in, my clipless mtn shoes are more comfortable to both ride in and walk in.

The "Lace Garage" is just plain stupid and ineffective.
Also they shoes are damn ugly.
Only the Arnhem looks half decent.

I'm looking on the site, and I just can't see it in the pictures, so I'll bite:

what the hell is a "lace garage"?

It's what I just explained, but mistakenly called a "gate". Sorry chrome I don't speak your marketing language correctly when talking about your shoes. It's a piece of elastic that you tuck your laces into to hopefully keep them from flopping about.

Yeah, they stink after getting wet. I haven't had any problem walking in them, they're good for that too.

I've been riding around in a pair of Kursks for a few weeks, and I'm a bit disappointed.

1) The stiffness of the soles is oversold, IMO; they flex a lot off the bike, and hot-foot me on the bike.

2) The grippiness of the toe complicates getting into clips and straps. That, plus the bar pattern on the tread tends to hang up on the back of the cage. I x-actoed some of the tread at a 45 degree angle, which helps, but not as much as I would like.

3) Minimal padding on the tongue, along with no padding on the "collar," makes them harsh on the upper foot and ankles, respectively.

For now, I've gone to using uncleated Lake MX 101s on my pedals. Flipping into clips with these feels like smacking the pedals with a baseball bat, but at least they don't hurt my feet so much.

It's amazing that Adidas hasn't caught on to the people modifying sambas into SPD clipless shoes and the amount of people responding to it saying "I want a pair!"

Maybe the department that designs their SPD shoes and the department that makes fashion shoes hate each other and refuse to work together!?!?

Maybe someone could start a business, modifying shoes to SPDs.
