government regulations.

"Fuji can’t sell its 2010 track frame in the U.S. built up as a bicycle due to government regulations
(there are no drillings for brakes)."

Lame. If I want to run no brakes I should be able to. Even if I don't want to.

This does not sound right to me.

I am not a lawyer but it doesn't seem like the government can regulate the brakes or brakelessness of bicycles that are not being ridden on public roads? (eg. track specific bikes that are ridden only at private velodromes)

Does anyone have a link to specifics about this alleged "government regulation"? Linked article is worthless since it lacks any specific details.

Strange. Do other bike manufacturers put drillings for brakes on their track frames? That's hard to believe for me.
I don't know why they should have to change their products just because of some stupid fad of people riding brakeless bicycles on the street.

I'm not sure I buy this. Aren't there already other non-drilled bikes being sold in the US complete?

There's no way that they are stating fallout from a federal regulation. State I'd believe but fed? God, I hope not.

Damn government, putting regulations on things, for what “safety”? Pffff please.
It’s like when they put a regulation on vehicle manufacturers, making them install seatbelts in every vehicle they roll out of the assemble line.?

It seems Trek should be able to get through loop hole with a DOT approved warning sticker.

"This bicycle is not intended for use on public roadways"

And then let the police do their job for giving out brake tickets as they see it fit. Dirt bikes are sold in the US, but they are off-road use only. If I ever took my Honda CRF205X out on the street, I'd get a ticket unless I installed DOT approved lights/turnsignals/mirrors, etc.

Same should be for track bikes.

Who would want to buy it as a built up bike? Anyone paying that kind of coin will cherry pick all the parts.

Probably because you save ~25% or more by buying complete?

Sure, but what good does that do you when you want to hang all different parts on it anyway?

Come to Philly and you'll see dirtbikes, quads, trikes, being ridden all over the city, any day of the week. Illegal? yes, but the police and the city do nothing about it, in other words they don't give a flying ****. So I guess this government regulation will be no big deal in Philly.

If you work at a bike shop you get huge discounts so buying just a frame does not make sense

Every bike I built when I worked at a shop started life as a frameset. Any shop rat worth anything knows where to find the cheap or free parts that work just fine.

True
But wouldn’t they also get a “Huge” discount on just the frame purchase also?
Heck, on any bike parts at that?
If so, if you had the choice, would you want a stock bike or a custom build bike of all parts of your choice?
I don’t know any bike shop mechanic who rides a stock bike.

From the way I understand it if you work at a bike shop, maybe its only bigger shops, you get one really good deal a year. This deal is something like right above manufactures cost. So you can either get a really good deal on a complete and maybe switch out some parts. You can get a good deal on just a frame, but then you would have to buy parts for a bit more. It is really looked down upon to buy a bike then strip the parts off so most people will not do this.

Just because a frame is drilled for brakes doesn't mean it won't work without brakes.

Looks like all they need to do to get around it is to spec it as fixed only, with tubular tires.

Not illegal; just not to be sold in stores as complete bikes. Once you buy a bike, you're pretty much free to do whatever you like with it.
