Researchers at Granada University in Spain have come across a discovery that will undoubtedly please athletes and sports enthusiasts - a pint of beer post-workout or match is better at rehydrating the human body than water. Professor Manuel Garzon, a member of Granada's medical faculty, made the finding after tests on 25 students over several months. Researchers believe that it is the sugars, salts, and bubbles in a beer that may help people absorb fluids more quickly.
The subjects in the study were asked to run on a treadmill at temperatures of 104F (40C) until they were close to exhaustion. Once they had reached the point of giving up, researchers measured their hydration levels, motor skills, and concentration ability.
Half of the subjects were given two half pints of Spanish lager to drink, and the other half were given just water.
Garzon said that the rehydration effection in those who were given beer was "slightly better" than those who were given only water. He also believes that the carbon dioxide in beer helps quench thirst more quickly, and that beer's carbohydrates replace calories lost during physical exertion.
The average person loses around 1 liter (33oz) of water for every hour of exercise in sweat. Rehydrating after a workout is crucial, as a lack of hydration is more likely to make one feel tired, fuzzyheaded, and suffer from headaches.
Based on the results of the study, researchers recommend moderate consumption of beer as a part of athletes' diets. "Moderate consumption" for men is 500ml per day, and for women is 250ml per day.
So that explains why Babe Ruth was so good. His method of training was nearly 100 years ahead of its time.

I drink beer post-ride, every ride.

Suck it.

Well, I'm not going to even bother finding the ton of academic research out there that shows all of the negative health effects beer and alcohol has on the body, and don't think for a second it isn't out there.

But you keep on drinking beer and I'll stick to my water, I see no problem with that.

Now back on topic, I just put a carbon fork on my Allez, I did a poor job with the headset, but it will work for now. I'll post pictures eventually.

Well, I'm not going to bother finding the ton of academic research that shows the health benefits of alcohol in moderation and I'll continue to drink alcohol in moderation (read less than 5-7 drinks/week) AND water.

Just to keep this post on-topic, I'm up to 120 miles for the week, but they were all on the fixed gear, the Cannondale is in pieces in the process of being cleaned/rebuilt.

(Passive-aggressive much?)

Sure, I'll play.

All kitted out, riding a Century on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway last June. This is 3 weeks after a crash where I fractured my right collarbone on the distal end as a lengthwise end split inside the joint capsule. Talk about some pain!

I run this place. I'm the Site Administrator. Basically, I specced my road bike to be able to handle cobblestones if I chose to. 3 years, on a set of hand built Deep V's, 15000 miles on the wheels, and still as true as the day they were put on. Oh yeah, I even use a tire popular with the Fixed Messenger crowd.....Soma Everwears.

You have a good eye. All Campy Super Record. The original Super Record pedals (the Chinook in the pic has Speed Plays) are attached to my Soma Rush. Mavic G40 rims, SR hubs of course.
