hope you got a concealed carry permit, @$$hole. you pull a gun on me, the only thing coming out of my pocket is my cell phone so i can call the cops on yr sorry ass... or i might just take yr gun from you and kick you in the nuts for being stupid. i've had guns on me before, and it's been my (limited) experience that most folks don't have the guts to pull the trigger, or the speed to react if you don't comply w/ their bullsh#t.

even if dinglenuts had a concealed carry, brandishing is illegal. that's breaking the golden rule of concealed carry etiquette.

I was doing a one-footed, no handed trackstand down a 48 degree hill with 80 pounds of locally grown organic coffee in my jumbo messanger bag, when this guy almost brushed me with his gas guzzling street coffin. I naturally blew him up with my laser without interrupting my trackstand.

I think I win.

Well, that could get you shot if someone on the side, (namely the POPO) views it. Here in San Diego the Popo have shot people for pulling pliers from their pants.

Stickers work for me. I'm gonna have to find some like progress put up. Though I'll be selective on the distribution.

Most of these threads seem like false bravado, and the ones I believe are just begging for retribution. If you're going to attack a driver/vehicle, presumably they've done something so stupid/wrong as to provoke an act that merits such violence--wouldnt this logically lead to expecting the driver to not be the most levelheaded and courteous person? And hence they would be far more likely to run your ass over or shoot you etc. Infestedguy has had a gun pulled on him for giving the finger. A U-Lock smash or keying might have killed him. We don't live in a kind world, and the best way to make the streets safer for cyclists is not by pissing off drivers.

edit: As an addendum, I usually just tap windows and describe how they have offended me, politely explain that bicycles are road vehicles etc. It works pretty well, I think, I'd say about 50% of people I talk to are receptive and come away with a positive impression. I watch for the other half to try and shoot me.

true story: i used to live in a fairly bad part of dc back in '94 (U street, near howard uni). i was out walking home from the store one night when a guy approached me, carrying something that looked like a gun, got up in my face and demanded my money. i politely told him no, took about a half step back, turned and ran my ass off. whether the guy had a real gun or a bb gun or a plastic model, i have no idea, but if you pull a gun on somebody, you better be prepared to use it. and for the record, i've never grabbed a gun from anyone, but i do know someone who has.

Back in my more indignant days after a particularly egregious too-close pass (dude nearly clipped me both on the passing and on the merging back), I tried to go up to do the tap-on-window education.

Mr. Man, fearing what sort of oils my fingertips might be leaving on his shiny BMW 325 started screaming at me to get my F'ing hands off his car. Being smart, I started yelling back about what an ******* he was, etc, etc.

When my new friend started frantically reaching for something under his seat I decided it was time for this guy to beat a hasty retreat. Who wants to get shot at close range just to make a point?

it seems like this whole debate could go round and round the rosie forever. and since alot of folks are discussing this, i'll add my 2cents (and thats about what its worth). for what its worth, i can see both sides of the argument on whether or not to retaliate when nearly killed by some a-hole driving a car. i guess what it really boils down to is how much you're willing to risk when you decide to retaliate. before a month or so ago, i completely advocated alot of the stuff (retaliation or whatever you want to call it) being said here, the coffee on the windshield was awesome, although i don't know if i would've wasted a good cup of coffee. anyways, now, whenever some **** in a car does something stupid, and i'm about to do something back, i remember what i felt like looking down the barrel of a gun pointed at me from ten feet away, and all i did was give this guy the finger. i just think to myself, "how much do i want to risk?" even IF i want to throw a brick through the windshield of the car that almost killed me (which i would love to do most of the time, and they are hidden quite nicely in my stash pocket), i still get that really sick feeling that maybe this person will get out of their car and shoot me.

My first post pretty much summarizes my feelings about the topic. Like a famous jew -- whose name escapes me -- once said, let he who is free of guilt throw the first stone. Most people who talk about duking it out with drivers are the ones who blow through stop signs and red lights, try to squeeze between cars riding perpendicular to the street direction, ride one handed holding coffee, etc. You know who you are. And stfu pls.

Riders who choose not to be dumbasses manage to (miraculously) stay out of trouble the overwhelming majority of the time.

Bikes: Specialized Hardrock Sport 2004

To the guy in DC.. I know exactly where you're coming from. Back in '92 I lived right at H & 8th in NE dc.. if you know the spot, just a few blocks down from Gallaudet University it's one hell of a scary place to live.

That was my greatest movitation to get a bicycle, and thus began my love affair with urban "mountain" biking, which lead to my current singletrack huckin love.

A few things happened to me as a ped that lead me to this (*slightly off topic I know, sorry, but that post about DC bought back memories.*) grand adventure as a biker:

1. Just walking innocently talking to a pal in the nicer neighborhood near GeorgeTown, one night,.. there was a car full of young men, what looked to us like gang bangers just sitting next to the sidewalk with the engine idling. My friend looked over first, all of sudden, and my eyes followed his direction, and I realized I was looking directly down the barrel of a glock pistol (I think thats what it was), and behind that barrel was this crazed pair of eyes belonging to the guy sitting in the passenger side. He was not more than 6 feet away.

I don't know how the hell this happened, but for some miracle, my pal and I both had the same reaction:

We both nodded our heads to his guy and said "yo!" and pretended like we never saw the gun and kept walking. The way we both saw it, we didnt have any choice. There was a big brick wall on our left of a local 7-11 store that went on what felt like MILES to us. To our right was that car full of those young men. Nothing in between.

As we walked on and put those guys behind us, the guy just went *POW POW* with his voice and the car sped away. *&#$^#!!!! Lucky, we were. Maybe they couldnt afford bullets? LOL

There were a few more things that happened to me there, but I'll just skip to this one:

2. At the bus stop on the corner of 8 & H there was this huge purple puddle. A group of my friends and I happened upon it on our way home and wondered what the heck it was, we thought someone dropped a glass jug of cranberry juice or something like that. There was a little mom n pop store right there. We weren't sure what it was so we went into our home.

Next morning, my roomate comes rushing into the living room with a newspaper article about what actually happened there. Some elderly man got stabbed by a young man who wanted his *free* bus transfer ticket (the ticket they give you for free when you want to change buses), and this young man waited for the bus and got on the bus using the same ticket while this elderly gentleman laid there bleeding a huge pool. Don't believe what you see on TV, old blood at crimescenes aren't red... it's purple. The worst part was the bus driver claimed she didn't see anything weird. WTF?

The scary thing is, just a few weeks before this, someone harassed me in the street wanting me to BUY his free bus transfer ticket, shoving me and stuff.

It was the NEXT day after this bus stabbing I went to a LBS and got me a '93 Specialized Hardrock, so I could ZOOM right through all those folks looking to harass me while I walk around DC. I much rather deal with cars than those people

*whew*

I'm glad I live in the woods in Missouri now.
