Its a lot more pleasing to the eye, and the weinmann's are perhaps heavier/the same weight, but they are also an upgrade if you plan on jumping a lot of curbs... Maybe not a HUGE upgrade in all aspects, but to most people they are a lot better than the stock rims.

Painting my kitchen celeste wasn't really an "upgrade" (considering there was nothing really wrong with the walls being white) and the paint was pretty expensive but Angie and I both like our kitchen a lot better now. Did I waste my money on a lateral move?

Painting walls is a lot different than new rims. Walls are nothing but paint. Besides modifying the architecture of the room there is nothing you do with walls except paint them.
Rims are something that have performance. The performance difference between weinmanns and stock wheels is negligible. If you are just too heavy for stock rims and they are flexing / popping spokes, weinmanns aren't the solution. Their sole purpose if you already have wheels is a color change, which could be achieved with $10 in sand paper, spray paint, and masking tape.

A carbon fork, which is where this all came from, is in fact a performance upgrade. Just is the $180 upgrade worth it to the OP? I simply suggested that he ride the stock aluminum one first and give it a try before deciding if it was worth the switch.

Leader frames do not come with a fork, you have to buy them separately... and Like I pointed out, the performance difference between weinmanns and stock wheels when jumping off a curb or going over potholes or doing whatever can be a Performance Upgrade to some people, but as you've argued, it is definitely not an upgrade in your mind.

stryper - I understand the point you're trying to make but sometimes people like to make "upgrades" simply to change the way something looks, which in turn causes them to get more enjoyment out of said thing - be it a room, bike or what have you.

There is no "stock" fork with the Leaders, they are frames only. So, why spend $100 on an aluminum fork to start with, when a carbon fork is probably a better choice, and you'll end up changing anyway. I have a VISP frameset with an aluminum fork, and it has a pounding ride in stark contrast with my Leader 721tr with the Leader carbon track fork. Same tires on both bikes.

Ok everyone, I appreciate all the suggestions and am about to take the plunge. Already ordered deep v's from velomine, black with machined front and nonmachined rear $185.

About to buy THIS FORK off ebay super cheap but originally stock on some Orbea bikes so should be good quality, found some old reviews too and think I'll be happy with it. Hate the graphics though so I'll probably sand down a bit, paint them flat black and clear coat with some duplicolor I already have laying around.

Found a good deal on a Sram s300 crankset which includes the BB. Was planning on 46t instead of 48t but have been feeling like I wanna faster lately so I think it's actually a better choice. Also getting a set of white kenda tires for free from a friend. So far its looking like I got the price down from possibly over $1500 to about $1200 or maybe a little less. The build appointment isn't until 4/30 so still have to wait a bit

I agree, the whole reason I let myself go over budget is because I do care about the aesthetics as well as function, otherwise I wouldn't have started out with the 725tr as a frame in the first place.

Everyone has their own idea of what looks best. For example, I would have gone with the All-City cranks instead of the SRAM S300 or even suggested the Andels, which are the same as the All-City w/o all the logos and are only $105 shipped from Ben's Cycle. Either way, you are getting good quality cranks at a reasonable price. Personally, I prefer track cranks with a 144 bcd spyder and a chainring that is flush with the spyder.

I really enjoy my s300 cranks that I have on my leader. They feel great, super easy to work with, and I really like the way they look. I would have gone with omniums if I was starting over, but I didn't need to spend the extra $60 for "street cred" . . . that being said, I got my S300's for $89, though I don't remember where.

Just found a better deal on ebay, 170mm though. What are you riding 165mm or 170mm? Worried about pedal strike.

170mm and not worried at all. I have been riding them with a Chris King bottom bracket so I can't comment on the GXP yet . . . I just swapped it in today, as I am using the King for a new project.

mine did, but I guess it might have been a special deal for the new release. i got mine with the custom color options too they offered back in like 09 when they released the 725tr. didn't know they no longer came with forks

Don't worry about pedal strike with 170s on a Leader. The 725 has a pretty high BB. I've got 170s on mine and wouldn't be able to pedal strike even if I tried really hard.

So wait, you're going to walk into this place with all these parts you bought yourself, some obviously cheap parts instead of the ones you and the LSB picked out. I assume they were to order all the parts for you and have them ready for the collaborative build? They were counting on that you know. Now you're gonna walk in there with all these parts and say, hey guys i changed my mind, lets use these. Theyre gonna look at you like wtf.

What so funny about that? I am inexperienced on bike building and think it is a great opportunity to learn instead of just having someone build me a bike.

The LBS offers this service regardless of how many parts you buy from them. Joe, the owner, said he's had people bring every single part they need including the frame and only charges labor. I am at least buying my frame and several other components from them. So far they are some of the most honest and helpful people I've dealt with at a LBS.

Then thats awesome. I wasn't aware. Some shops/people are weary of this practice, and see it as taking up their time. But sounds like a great way to learn how to work on bikes. I'm currently buying up parts and building up a 2x10. Never done it, but i'm pretty good with tools. So we'll see what happens. The only thing i'm really not sure of is how to match up BB with crankset. All i know is that the frame takes a 68mm english. But there are so many, and it dictates which crankset. but its all confusing. I'll figure it out.
