tonight i just got my A/V home system fully configured. It's sick.
I have a sweet yamaha 600w 5.1 receiver, and i wired up the speakers+subwoofer like a month ago. being playing audio through a headphone jack and the 32" LED Vizio HDTV has just been sitting here for hella time, till now. i bought this sweet adapter at radioshack (USB/HDMI) that lets me configure my laptop like a blue ray/dvd player - the audio goes through my surround speakers and im typing this post right now with the display on the TV. sweet. the A/V goes from the laptop into the receiver via HDMI, then HDMI out from the receiver to the TV for the display, Finally the audio comes back from the TV to the receiver and finally to the speakers with an optical audio cable. im typing this right now from my coffee table on the couch via wireless keyboard/mouse... so freakin' sweet. this laptop (i have 2) is just gonna camp up here and be used for netflix/pandora/itunes or to utube and google random crap. |
Added a decal to my GF's bike as a finishing touch. Build is inspired by Audrey Hepburn. Black and white, with a touch of lipstick and gold.

Ummm not really.... Analog > optical. No denaturing coding and decoding necessary.

FTFY.
Keep in mind analog was here 1st. :p Well before toslink/ SPDIF. I assumed that because the linkages were all HDMI that it would be high-resolution, but the screen definitely is not (high resolution) i may ultimately get a 1080p streaming dvd/blu player for netflix and movie/show only purposes. this configuration however is sufficient for doing google/utube/pandora or for my itunes of course. |

As for 1080, you need output and input to be the same for HD. HDMI & expensive HDMI cables mean squat. There's actually 480p sets out there that share said standard. If you have a HDMI capable computer, take advantage of overscan/ underscan features of the graphics drivers if you experience letterboxing. Don't get a standalone player. Get a used PS3, they should be cheap now being at the end of its console lifecycle and the PS4 on the horizon. Plus it's going to be able to play soon to be bargain bin/ clearance games. |
oooo thats right a streaming ps3 or wii or something is a better call

Ahh now I get the whole TMonk thing. Yeah I've always liked that song (and movie) - a jazz version would rock.

I just do hdmi everything now. The days of pricey silver cables are gone. Cheap hdmi cables move the 1's and 0's just as well. Also, apple tv2 jailbroken and running xbmc ftw! |

One could argue that optical > analog if you're not converting the signal...digital source to digital source.

First time biking in a huge downpour, at least that's what I'd call it, I'm from California so we don't get storms like people get else where. It started off being warm on my way to class, then midway through class my professor yells "Oh ****, Its raining like mad outside, this is ridiculous, how the hell is it gonna be sunny out and pourin at the same time". That moment I realized I had to bike back, and most of the roads were filling up with water fast. I got soaked down to my core, and also realized that I'm used to always biking in dry conditions that when I applied back pressure to my pedals to stop I ended up skidding and almost doing a 360. Could've sworn that it had to have rained a good 1/4 inch in less than an hour, but then again I'm probably exaggerating, but the slopes by the curbs were filled to up with water at least 2 inches high.
Lesson Learned: Always bring an umbrella with me to class no matter how normal it seems outside. |
Send the rain up this way, it's needed.
