Do you weld bike frames Bananas? (just curious)

I have welding experience, but not with bike frames. It's one of my dreams to build my own frame. I came very close to taking a frame building class but was ultimately unable to due to scheduling conflicts. :(

Our welding instructor explicitly told us not to grind off our welds, since this lowers the overall structural integrity. However, it is totally fine to grind/sand welds on things where the strength of the weld is not as important (such as an art piece), but it is definitely not a good idea for something that needs to be structurally tough, like a bicycle frame.

That's not to say that sanded welds would cause the bicycle to fall apart, but I would be suspicious of any frame that has sanded welds, especially if I am unfamiliar with the framebuilder.

Also, it is a sign of excellent craftmanship to be able to make welds that are both strong and small (i.e. don't need grinding to look better), so there's that.

My two cents.

With Cannondale, don't they have a small primary weld, then an aesthetic weld over it that they grind and smooth out?

Scrodzilla 05-04-12 03:45 PM

Yes, as it should be done.

Has anyone ever seen a Cannondale that failed at the welds?

LesterOfPuppets 05-04-12 03:58 PM

Cannondales definitely have filler weld added. The radii are too huge to be all original weld.

But, the good news is all of our Belgian beers (and our Dutch cheese) survived the flight in our checked bags! And customs didn't charge us duty or give us any hassle (in fact, the dude started talking to us about lambics).

Yay! Glad you're back. Now I have someone to play bieks with again!

Tryin' to remember if I ever have. I heard 'em referred to as Crack'n'fails lotsa times in the 90s, but they's prolly haters.

I was unaware of this. As long as they don't grind the main weld, that seems better, albeit a bit weird.
As an unrelated note, I am "meh" towards Cannondales in general.

Is that an older CRT Viewsonic? People hate on them, but I've always loved them.

Also, Cannondales are some of the nicest bikes around. CAAD with 105 can be bought for a great price and performs amazingly.
