Yesterday, I headed into Boston--biked to the bus station, got to Boston S Station, biked over to Inman Sq. Then the reverse back home, 24 miles of riding.
So nice out. Cold, about 30, but tolerable once bundled up and pedaling, and just a gorgeous, sunny day. No one out New Years morning; no one working in Boston. Never biked the city with such light traffic before, but a bike is still the best way to get around. Not much wind, occasional gusts, except the Longfellow Bridge, which is uphill, into the wind, both ways... Some snow and ice, but I'd put some work into the basket townie including studded tires, which worked fine. Night before, New Years Eve, I: geared up the bike with spares on hand, so SRAM bar end front shifter which doesn't play well triples, so ditched the small ring and set the low limit on the SLX der to stop at the middle ring. 36/46 setup. Suntour DT friction shifter bodged to a Shimano bar end pod limited me to 6 8sp gears out back, custom cassette of 11/13/17/21/26/32, LX mtn der. One splurge: Velo-Orange Porteur bars. All came together quick, worked flawlessly. Beater bike, so perfect to literally throw under the bus (luggage space) for the bus portions; not afraid to leave it locked outside in the city; OK to ride through corrosive slush. Ergos with the new bars just jelled. Frankenshifting worked well, and gearing was perfect for the city. Almost no need for a double up front. ...Except now that I'm getting this dialed it more and more, little thoughts start creeping in: legit brake levers might be nice. Maybe a 30/46 combo up front? New shifters and a full cassette out back? Evil thoughts about pretty much converting this from a total low-cost, parts bin frankenbike, into a way sweet mtn/porteur conversion. Luckily, finances dictate I leave it alone. 10 degrees outside... I might not ride today... |

I like what we did here. |
Today I woke up realizing I forgot about two 3 page essays I have to write for school that I had since the 22nd to do. Stayed home to finish this ****. To much of a wuss to face my teachers....

Sounds like a cool build, mconlonx. Mine should be cheap, too, but I can't resist adding high-zoot parts here and there...

Was too tired to post yesterday so let's pretend it was yesterday:
Today I: competed in my first USA Cycling race - San Bruno Mountain hill climb. I got 12th in a combined Cat 4/5 field after a 400 mile week. Not a bad way to start the year. Obligatory pain face: http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...25241334_n.jpg |

~Today, I got word that I might ether go up North to Washington or Chicago for a consulting gig for that one company that makes 747's. |
Nice.
Today I mainly rode the dmr, but put in a couple of miles on the 930 in order to try out the new shoes. |
Today I booked the flights for our trip out to San Diego and LA in March. Stoked!

Nice, have fun.

Today I rode a solid 35 miles with Muffin Man. Got a little lost, but oh well.
He also bought my brake set which was cool. We set it up with length of Yokozuna Reaction, and I gave him a set of Swiss Stop Greens. His brakes work, he showed me. <____< His sudden braking = me skidding GP4KS's >______> sunuva***** Had a little sprinting match at Alameda Naval Air. Ate McD's. He also was my backup for a CL deal. Sold the Kilo wheelset for a bill. Today was a good day. |

Today, I dropped a car at the bus station and rode 7 mi back home. 19 deg F when I left; 11 by the time I got back.
Two days into the new year, two days involving bike riding. Made chocolate cupcakes and coconut milk ice cream with blueberries, toasted almonds, and chocolate chips. 2013 is a good year so far. |
