Btw... my bike was chastised by this forum too but I love it anyway. I didn't buy it to race in a velodrome and I didn't buy it for street cred. I bought my bike as a budget road bike trainer and, for it's purpose, it's just about perfect. I ride it nearly every day and thanks to it I've lost a bit over 15 lbs and have put just over 600 miles on it since I bought it in February.

stuart is so cool...
ya i was looking at several bikes not only the butcher.
i started off with the dawes sst al then was looking at the merc kilo wt, while decided on the merc i found the pk ripper but i dont trust the frame, and then the se lager which looks like a decent bike but some bad reviews here on the forum. i found the information on this website to be pretty helpful. im on page 364 of the ss/fg photos thread and i found that more and more people are posting the TT. i want something a little better.

If you have $800.00 to spend then look at the All City Big Block. I just bought one from City Grounds for $699.00. I made a few changes to it, but stock it is a pretty sweet bike. I had a hard time trying get off of mine tonight thats how much I like it. You get a great frame, Alex R450 wheels with Vittoria Zaffiro slicks, cane creek S3 headset, All City 612 cranksv(blows my sugino messengers away as far as stiffness is concerned), a good bottom bracket, tektro brakes etc. etc.
Here, check it out

anybody have any experience with the redline monocog 29er? i rode one around the parking lot at my lbs and it felt ok but i wish the chain ring was larger diameter. i was pedaling fast but not going anywhere. guy said he would swap the rear cog 19t for a smaller one but i still want to be quick on the flat. i thought the frame was aluminum but im looking around of the web and it says its 100% chromoly.

op...before your thread goes completely culinary...
i see that you posted in a couple other threads that you plan on putting a big chainring on your new cog.
i am not saying it won't work but i have a ss 29er that at one time i was determined to turn into a do-everything bike & give it better road gearing.
here is something i learned...
do you see how the chainstays really widen out to accommodate those big 29" mtb tires? well you better double-check your bike to see if it has clearance for the big chainring you have planned. fyi, the biggest ring my bike can take before it hits the stay is 39t & it is so close that i won't even use it.
good luck...

Are you picking bikes based on looks? Nothing wrong with that, just curious, as the bikes you like seem to have a similar look. It'd be dumb of me to argue that I picked my bike on function alone, since this SSFG, but I think that it's definitely something to consider at least a little bit. I mean, I like the way NJS pursuit bikes look, but I won't ride one around town.

ah man that changes everything... i see what your talking about... i dont want a 29er that i cant run a larger ring gear on... **** back to square one... im going to go eat a pulled pork sandwich and potato salad i guess...
Damnit...

If you aren't tricking, I don't see why you are so concerned about strength. Any reputable steel frame will be strong enough for normal use.

this is a pic of a 42/16 gear setup on the monocog. its a different crank than the one im looking at so i guess ill go again and look at the clearance. if the 42 fits then im gonna buy it. if it doesnt then im gonna keep lookin...
