If there's nothing wrong with it, why is it stupid? Because you said so?

Probably makes more sense than riding your typical brakeless track bike on the street (which I happily do, mind you).

That was in reference to driving a hummer to soccer practice.. and yeah I do think that would be pretty stupid.

ya i want to be able to take the occasional stairs or curb and not worry about my frame braking or a wheel turning into a taco. based on my very newbish opinion i think that the butcher would be a great commuter. i could even go in the dirt if i found a short cut to school. ive yet to find a better bike for my style of riding... but still lookin : )

check out this quote i got from a customer with tricktrack.org on the butcher:
"I've put about one hundred miles on this build in the past two weeks. It's the best riding commuter I've ever owned. It's literally everything I've wanted in a bike"
how can i argue with that?

If you have $800.00 to spend then look at the All City Big Block. I just bought one from City Grounds for $699.00. I made a few changes to it, but stock it is a pretty sweet bike. I had a hard time trying get off of mine tonight thats how much I like it. You get a great frame, Alex R450 wheels with Vittoria Zaffiro slicks, cane creek S3 headset, All City 612 cranksv(blows my sugino messengers away as far as stiffness is concerned), a good bottom bracket, tektro brakes etc. etc.

Here, check it out

That's not very much riding for 2 weeks

ryzman...
you earned the initial snarking that you got by your initial post but...
if after doing your shopping & research, that butcher is the bike that appeals to you the most & you can afford it...go for it.
riding a bike that you really like is a helluva lot better than getting a few attaboys in an interwebz forum.
good luck & have fun...

Why even ask for advice if he's going to buy the first bike that strikes his fancy anyway?

Yeah the Butcher looks cool, but is it ideal for commuting? I doubt it, but whatever. The best way to learn what you want is by finding out yourself.

yeah the leader track frames, pista concept/super pistas & other track bikes look really cool too, but are they ideal for commuting? i doubt it, yet around here when someone mentions using one of those for daily riding they get compliments. but when anybody sez they are leaning towards a jumping/freestyle type bike, all they hear is it's too specialized, no good for general use.

hmmmm...

There's a difference between "daily ride" and "commute".

I ride my Leader 725 just about every day. Would I commute on it? Nope.

commute or daily ride...that's kind of arguing semantics...

where do you ride that leader every day? to any place of your places of work, ever? if so, wouldn't that be a commute? or is it just a daily ride?

there's a thread somewhere here titled long distance commutes & it turns out that op was going on a long weekend ride & wanted to know about the longest rides guys have ever done on their ss/fg bikes. as snappish as it can get here...nobody questioned his commuting phrasing vs an actual epic ride question.

TejanoTrackie...looks like you have some fun on the way to work, i like it! how come you don't post "your" vid in the sweet fg/fs edits thread?

Not really.

For the record, I ride my Leader 722 - which is equipped to be much more practical/comfortable for commuting - to work and to run errands around town. I take my 725 out when I just want to ride, as it's not the bike I'd want to be on while carrying a bag containing my laptop, lunch and various other items.

FWIW, I was supremely annoyed by that thread once I clicked and read it because I do think commute when someone says commute. I just didn't say anything because I feel like I'm too new here to call people out. Words have meanings and using the correct ones isn't just semantics.

I commute with all my work clothes, shoes, lunch, sometimes laptop, etc. in panniers on a rear rack on a geared CX bike. I call it my commuter/touring bike. Even though my route to work is through the city, I only call my SS a "city bike" which is I think is like what scrod calls a "daily ride."

Now the word "commute" looks weird, LOL.

Am I the only one amused by how lame that video was? It was like some half-breed down syndrome mutant struggling to walk and just kind of crawling along instead...

On a serious note though, the guy in the video looked like he was seriously struggling to even just ride the bike down the sidewalk. If that's what you really want in a bike... go for it!
