Should I get my BB shell and head tube refaced when installing the new headset and BB?

When I inspected the inside of the drop outs a found a chip and grooves from the axle threads in the drop outs. My question is, should I be worried about critical failure or just let it be with some clear nail polish? Few friends suggest to just leave it, because there are no visible threads coming off the chip or grooves. Just want another opinion, thanks.

Without seeing it, it's hard to say for sure but I think you'll be ok.

I'm sure some will argue with this but if you had it faced/chased the first time around, you should be alright.

Stock kilo, its never been touched down there, other than greasing, and tightening.

If you're cool with spending the money to have it done and plan on keeping it a while, have it done.

Can not doing it damage the bottom bracket?

Scrodzilla 06-23-12 11:29 PM

Over time, maybe.

also not scrod. 105's are nice. If you buy them, make an ebay account (if you dont have one), and get them there. There are several sellers that offer 105's, both black and silver, for $62 shipped from the US.

if you're a prime member you can get them on amazon for $59 w/2 day shipping

isn't the only difference between them and R540s ($40) a couple of grams?

[h=2]im 5'10 - 5'11......would a 57cm be a better fit or 55cm?[/h]

The 105's have a steel shoe plate. The R540's have a plastic one. Shimano considers both of the shoe plates a "consumable" part. The steel plate is never going anywhere. The plastic plate on the R540's doesn't last too long. The R540's are modeled after DA's, while the 105's look more like ultegras.

I mainly went with the 105's instead of the R540's because because of the steel shoe plate, and never having to worry about it. It was worth the $20. and they're shiny.

What the hell is wrong with you?

Weinmann Deep V or Velocity? You're reasons why would be swell too.

Mumonkan 06-24-12 05:17 PM

good sir, whats the threshhold of "unsafe" for the ratio of steer tube:empty space in the stem? the 722 headtube is longer so my steerer might some up short by about 15mm from my previous setup and i was thinking of testing it out with my current fork, but if thats too much i wont bother taking it all apart

i had asked this already but i think it got lost a couple pages ago, pls dont beat me.

Adrian_ 06-24-12 05:27 PM

When I cut my steerer's the most empty space I leave is about 3-4 mm.

Velocity. Quality is better and they're lighter.

There are tons of types of Velocity. Any recommendations? I use them for road.

I found your cleverly hidden text!

I typically cut the steerer to be level or slightly above the top of the stem stack and use a small spacer up top.

As Adrian said, 3-4mm is common. I would never want 15mm of empty space inside my stem clamp as that doesn't leave enough for the stem to grab on to.

If you're looking for a good strength/weight ratio, go with Fusions. If you're a weight weenie, go for Aeroheads and make sure they're built well.

Have you ever tried riding with a worn pair of V1 straps in flip flops? It feels very dangerous but amazingly comfy.

Also, have you ever just found a really good .gif and instantly searched SSFG because there is always bound to be a perfect place to use it?

Scrodzilla 06-24-12 08:09 PM

No and yes. Sometimes I'll find a gif and leave it open in a tab for days just waiting for the right time to drop it.

Have person tagging along with me that is a motocross and wants to start doing road rides for endurance. Should I make him suffer on the first ride?

nuhtowel 06-24-12 08:16 PM

I do it every time i find a really good one, theres always a thread that any .gif could be used
