Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Scrod - is the S2C hub as bad as all the online chatter makes it seem? I'm looking for a coaster option and a kickback seems novel. I could do single speed coaster brake, but I want to mix it up. If not the S2C I'm looking at a nexus three speed internal but then I have to deal with a shifter which is meh. I already have an 8 spd IGH which is why I don't mention it as an option. Thoughts on the S2C or other options I should look at for a backup bike or something I could let my dad ride without worrying about breaking him?

Not Scrod you coud look at the Sram automatic as well. I've has the S2 since last winter it takes a few days to learn to shift smoothly well as some thought to gearing

I test drove one at my LBS this past summer. I wouldn't say it was bad, just different. The main downsides I noticed were that it was pretty loud and it was VERY heavy. Switching gears was kind of awkward for me, but I could see how you'd get used to it. Basically I decided that I didn't care enough about having an extra gear to put up with the added expense, weight, noise, and possible failure of the hub.

I rode a bike with an S2 that belonged to a friend of a friend very briefly but don't have any real-world experience with it. As Xgecko said, figuring out the shifting was a little tricky.

I really like it a lot, chasing the Gearing was my only issue. My bike is primarily a townie/utility bike so having gearing that I can use every day was most important. When I was riding Fixxed I was using a 70" gear so I tried to work my gearing around that. I initially went for 34/16, (56"/79")a low climbing gear and a top gear a big past what I was used to (huge mistake) I ended up spinning out on climbs, even carrying a 40lbs bag of dogfood, and my top gear was worthless on any kind of incline I dropped to 34/15 (60"/84") for a bit before settling on 34/14 (65"/90") Thankfully the Cogs are $3-$4 and spring rings are $1.50. As it stands now I can get around my town easy enough, rec ride when I want and even keep up with my brother and father on long bike path rides. Fixxed and free gearing is less related with this hub than a SS Now the freehub is a pound less than the coaster, so weigh the desire for aesthetics against being a weight weeny. I have tried the Sram automatic hub and it also takes some getting used to though less thought. Fewer gear options with the Sram but unless you are like me and limited by the size of your chainring that probably isn't an issue.

It's amazingly simple and awesome on fish tacos or any kind of grilled fish or chicken. It's even good just with tortilla chips as an appetizer or whatever. I prefer to use fresh pineapple but if you're lazy, you can use canned pineapple in a pinch*.

Take a fresh pineapple, skin it and cut it in half. Put the top of the pineapple on your cat's head and laugh at him. He loves that ****. Chop one half up into pieces that will fit into a blender and puree it (you may need to add a little water or - if you have it - pineapple juice to get it moving. Don't add too much!)

Throw in a large fresh jalapeno pepper or two - (you can adjust this to taste when making later batches) and a big ol' handful of fresh cilantro, stems and all (there is a lot of flavor in the stems). Don't use pickled jalapenos or dried cilantro.

Dice up the remaining half of the pineapple into very tiny pieces. You don't need to be careful and will most likely end up with some mush. That's okay. If there's a lot of juice, strain it out.

Mix the stuff from the blender with the pineapple you just mangled up in a big bowl and stir it up well. I like to chop up some more cilantro and throw it in so there's big leaves in there.

Chill and eat (it's better cold and takes the harshness out of the jalapeno if it hangs out for a while).

*If you use canned pineapple, just substitute two cans of crushed pineapple for the fresh stuff. Drain some of the juice out of one can, put it in the blender with a little of and throw in the pepper and cilantro. Drain the other can really well and mix it with the stuff from the blender.

Hi Scrod, I read on another thread that you have some experience with the Pake French 75. I just want to make sure I'm not a complete idiot. On the pake website, it says I need a "1-1/8” headset size (Cane Creek IS Integrated style headset required; 41.1)". I'm planning on ordering this then:

https://www.amazon.com/Cane-Creek-40-...=cane+creek+40

Will that headset fit? This being my first time dealing with integrated headsets, do I need to buy a star nut separately? Thanks.

That should do the trick. The headset will include a starnut.

Want an all around bomb proof wheel set that's black, msw. Which do you think I should use: A23, Aerohead, or Kinlin x200? All laced to. Novatec, 32h 3x. Or do you think there isn't much difference between the three?

Also, are NMSW A23's OK with using brakes?

If you want ultimate bombproofness without weighing a mertic **** ton, Deep Vs are hard to beat. Built with Novatecs and Sapim Lasers, they really won't be that heavy. How light do you want them to be?

The anodized surface will wear off after a while but you'll be ok.

I do want a set on the lighter side of things, but something I don't have to worry about too much. I guess dependable in all but the most extreme situations.

Velocity Aeros aren't exactly light at 535g but mine are indestructible. I'm impressed with my TB14s as well.
