I am in the planning/researching phase of building up a new bike. I've decided to go with a freewheel and a front brake on this one. Gasp-the horror.

So after lots of reading and trying to ejumakate myself on freewheels, it sure seems like the White Industries jobs are the way to go. Actually it seems like there is nothing out there that even compares. I've emailed them with a few questions about chain line etc., but I do have one question for you.

Your site says "• colors: 16t is red, 17-23t are blue". Is that a typo or do you have some stock from a previous run from the factory? I ask because WI states the opposite, but I'd rather have a 19 in blue as you describe.

Now that I'm here, and forgot to ask them, are their lock rings available separately?

Pending Scrod's official reply, I'm pretty certain it's a typo. I have a WI ENO 19T freewheel and it's definitely red.

Also, why do you need a lockring ? It's only needed for a fixed cog, and not required for a freewheel.

Also, if you are running a freewheel, then you also need a rear brake.

I'm using their terminology. It's the ring that holds the inner drive and the outer gear case together. They call it a locking ring. I knew that might appear confusing. I'd actually prefer black or silver since the bike is going to be neither blue nor red.

Belt and suspenders, just in case, I know, I know. At my speeds and environment I'm gonna risk it.

Yeah, that's a typo. 16t is blue, others are red. As far as I know, White Industries does not make a black anodized locking ring. However, I don't work for WI so you may be better off contacting them and asking.

Does it really matter what color a small part of your freewheel is, though?

Seriously? The bike will be slow and handle like **** with a clashing component. My bikes are hard core and I am a very serious guy. I don't want to look like a clown out there. Oh wait...too late for that.

Second opinion on facing the top and bottom of a headtube in order to get a threadless fork with a slightly too short a steerer tube to work?

How much of the head tube do you plan on taking off?

If you can, take it from the top. I did it on an old Scwhinn for the same reason. I needed a few more threads to engage so I took off ~3mms total. A tiny bit from the bottom and a little more from the top. As long as you aren't hitting the welds, lugs, brazing you should be OK.

I don't know. Must have been a low blood sugar moment - lunch break is very late today. For some reason, I was thinking something about cutting down the cup on the headtube would make the headset races smash closer as if tightening or loosening the threaded race/locknut doesn''t have an impact. Caffeine is making that seem more stupid even as I type it.

H Plus Son's site says they are available in "Grey Ano" and separately lists "Hard Ano". Different prices so I am assuming there is a difference.

Your site lists "Hard Grey Ano".

Have you seen the two different finishes? Is one more greyish or one more silverish?

I ave no idea. The only grey H+Son rims available in the US are hard anodized.

Nothing too crazy (which is exactly what I wanted). Dinner with Angie and then called in our backyard around the fire pit with a couple of friends.

You can use brakes on Archetypes, which are anodized after machining.

Thanks. Will it eventually turn silver or will that anodizing stay black?

The braking surface on my SL42's turned silver after a day or 3. But apparently you can buy brakepads that prevent that from happening. Can't remember what they're called though...
