That's what I was thinking too. If that's the problem, hopefully you didn't deform the interface.

I checked the crank arm last night as well, it was already tight as sin, I couldn't budge it any tighter. I'll just throw on another set of pedals here to see if it goes away

if it doesn't I'll investigate further

Scrod,

Do you think a 722 w/ S803 would fit a 27" wheelset without clearance issues? or would it be foolish since I'd probably be limited on tire sizes? I just have an old 27" wheelset hanging on the wall I'd like to rebuild and use for a future bike.

jaded_fable 12-18-11 05:33 PM

I'm looking at taking a jump into the world of wheelbuilding by building myself a rear wheel (and then a front wheel when I have the funds). For the rim I'm pretty much between the A23 and the Foer 41- I noticed the Foer warns against trick riding, which I don't do, but as a ~135 pounder who lives in a city with pretty terrible roads, should I be concerned about the rim's integrity? Am I going to fold it if I accidentally hit a pothole riding home at night? In general, which would you recommend?

Side note: What hubs would you recommend?

Thanks!

Dear Scrod,
What do you think allows a wheel to support more weight: deeper rim or more spokes?

And will Alex Race 28s be sufficient for around 300lbs?

Thanks

I just tried it on mine for ****s and giggles. The rear just barely fit and the front did not.

There are a lot of variables and it really depends on which rims/spokes.

If they're built right and you don't beat the crap out of them, they should hold up just fine.

Thanks[/QUOTE]

Neither rim will explode after hitting a pothole. As for hubs, I've been really happy with my Novatecs.

Ah damn. It looks like I start my search for a classy rim. Thanks for trying though!

I've had this issue a couple times. First time, BB needed greased up. Second time, chainring bolts needed greased/tightened. Third time, pedal was ****ed.

Hey Scrod,
Can you recommend a kind of chain lube? I'm getting fed up with Triflow.

How did you gain your vast bicycle knowledge? Any books you can recommend? I am currently reading Zinn and The Art of Road Bike Maintenance

I have a question about installing Omniums. My friend has been riding on his set and has been complaining that the binding bolt keeps loosening up. I took a short look at it and tightening the bolt just adds a ton of resistance to the crank turning. In addition to that, he has wrecked only the drive side cartridge bearing from riding with the bolt tight. I looked it up and there is nothing to this so I'm confused.

ddeadserious 12-19-11 10:05 AM

Scrod,

Do you know of anywhere that sells an individual lever(not a set) similar to the Tektro RL720 with a 31.8mm clamp?

The stock BB that comes with Omniums are a crap shoot - some of them seem fine and others total junk.

There really isn't any trick to installing them, you just tighten the bolt and go. If the frame has a BB shell that's a true 68mm, the crank arm will bottom out on the spindle before the bolt becomes overtightened.

What all did you use to get your dreds to their current state?

Scrod,

Mavic Open Pro CD + http://www.ebay.com/itm/Miche-Primat...#ht_1420wt_952 = any good?

another option i was considering was Velocity Aerohead + formula hubs.

Jandro 12-19-11 07:00 PM

Scrod,

Do you have any experience with Primato hubs? I am looking to get a wheelset with double-sided fixed hubs. 16T cog on one side and either 17/18T on the other. (paired with a 48T crank of some sort -- prob the SRAM S300).

The Wabi's look pretty good for the price but their pre-built wheels only come in flip/flop as far as I can tell.

Gracias.

markaitch 12-19-11 07:06 PM

sorry for butting in scrod...@jandro - the wabi rear hub is now fixed/fixed

Thinking about grabbing a Kagero, but I'm unsure about the sizing. I ride a 53cm 725 mid, and feel just a lil' bit stretched out when in the track drops. My question is if I should grab a large or medium?

Medium. My large rides like a 58.

Would you happen to know the stand over measurements?

dk2ck 12-19-11 10:04 PM

Dear Scrod,

How do you know when a headset is too tight? I know a sign of a headset being too loose is feeling play when you hold the front brake and rock the handlebars back and forth...but how do you tell if it's too tight?

Thanks!

gilmatic 12-19-11 10:24 PM

Dear Scrod,

Should I build my front H+Son SL42's with a 20 hole spoke count or should I stick with 32's? I ride my bike on and off the track so I'm not so sure if I should ride with a 20 in the front when I'm on the street.
