Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Too legit or must quit?

Found something confusing on the 'bay, need some expert advice. Take a peek at:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Cannondale-C...8#ht_2910wt_81

Underneath the baskets, kick back hub and flat bars is a decent track bike, no? What do you guys think, is it worth persuing as a street bike?

Looks like a pretty sweet bike all around. Probably not an ideal track bike, but a great commuter/street bike. I'd ride it.

The price is pretty steep for a second hand bike...

A C'Dale capo does not equal a Cannondale track

This I did not know. I guess that explains why it came stock with drops or straight bars.

I'd hit that, but not at , or anywhere near that price.

It looks like a pretty practical city bike.

I'd not seen those new fangled s/a hubs till now, kickshift ! Pretty neat , wonder if it works well or is just a bit gimmicky.

I didn't look at the price at first. Price definitely seems steep.

Are you aware that your abbreviated "the 'bay" uses twice the characters (8) as the proper noun "eBay" (4)?

Sorry. It was just bugging me.

Carry on...

General consensus is they're quite good. Serious riders are finding need a rebuild every couple years, which amounts to taking apart and putting it back together - not exactly difficult. Drum brake models take a few minutes to get used to since both braking and shifting is done by pedaling backwards. SA hubs in general are more reliable than Shimano's IGHs, and they keep parts in stock forever.

SRAM recently released its own 2-speed hub, but it uses an automatic shifting mechanism. It's too new to tell how well it works yet.

Just took one of these around the block... Disc front, 2-speed auto coaster brake 26'er Swobo Otis . . . but the shop built it up with this SRAM auto (which it normally comes with a 3 speed)

I have to say, I would like it more if it wasn't a coaster brake, but it did feel pretty solid. I would imagine it to work like a set of ball bearings that when traveling at ~13mph would trigger the next gear. I would love to be able to change at what point it engages, but I don't know if that is possible. All-in-all if the price was the same, I'd go for it!

I'm 100% in support of making nerdly observations, even moreso when they're least appropriate. That's how I live my life.
