Particularly because at 42/17 that is a cadence of something like 190 RPM. But I've never used a computer or speedometer before, so I guess that could be right.
Even when I import from my Garmin the max speed it always significantly faster than what is shown on Garmin connect.
Everything else is the same except elevation.

so how come when you finish a ride and it's like "average 16.1mph" and you upload it, it suddenly drops to "15.5" or something?

I picked up a garmin so I could stop lugging around the iphone. so hopefully my elevation woes are a thing of the past

Cheapest option would just be to use your phone.

You could also look for an old garmin forerunner 200 series. I see them cheap on craigslist.

This is the cheapest option. Other than that the 200 is your best bet.

Also, your average speed go down because Strava has it's own algorithms to take into account stops, and GPS correction. It's rare that your Strava track will be the same as your unit readout. Mine is consistently .1-.2mph slower. I use an Edge 800 unit.

Sure will. With the older models the gps tech isn't as good as it is now. This means it may take longer for it to lock on to the satellite when you first head out (protip: turn it on and set it outside facing south 5-10 mins before you leave). It also means if you're riding through an area with lots of tree coverage or tall buildings you may lose the connection. It'll reconnect fairly quickly once you're clear.

Overall these two things are not a big deal. The worst I've had is losing about a kilometer on a long run.

One more thing - my old one requires a serial port to connect to the computer, so you'll probably need a serial-usb adapter cable.

does uploading to garmin always take forever? only a 30 minute ride and it took near 10 minutes to upload

anyway, the breakdown you get is pretty awesome and the map is really detailed.

is 5 miles the default "lap" or did I program that by accident?

Garmin 200 seems like a waste.

Last I checked, it couldn't do cadence/power etc. Is that correct?

Correct, no ANT+ compatibility.

For anyone on the fence, check out DC Rainmaker's blog. He's done some really really comprehensive reviews of Garmin devices: Click

Bikes: Geekhouse Deerfield, GT Edge Ti, Spooky Skeletor, TET Track, Ritchey P-650b, Bridgestone MB-3

Might be in the market for one this summer.

It especially sucks to use my Android phone cuz I only have 200MB of data/month and I use like 15+MB every ride.

the extra "features" dont really make it worth IMO.
plus battery life is terrible, (i have back light set to OFF) and its good for about 12hrs (i like long rides)
my 500 did 20hrs once

touch screen is iffy with gloves
fragile front screen (have cracking starting in mine)

the maps are cool, and i've used it for turn by turn directions...
