Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

I got my 3T bars and stem in. Now just waiting on my bar tape. I could not wait for the bar tape to arrive so I went for a little ride yesterday.

I had no idea why a short stem would be dumb but that really made me more comfy because top tube is a bit too long for me.

I would still try a longer stem first thanks

Here's a wacky idea: Buy a frame that fits you.

wifey's new ride. SS w/ coaster brake. Now just waiting for my bike to be finished at the lbs so we can go ride along the Hudson.

Thinking of changing her gearing from a 48 x 16 to a 48 x 20. Think the gearing is too low going to a 20?

Well, 48 x 16 is certainly way too high, but I'd first try 48 x 18 and see how that feels to her. I've got 46 x 18 on my new Soma Rush FG with riser bars, and it feels just right for me. I've also got 46 x 18 on my Windsor Clockwork SS, and like it as well.

If it is then, disregard. If it is a coaster, I'd be even more likely to go with 48x20. Also, you should post some drive-side pics.

It's her first time riding in over 20 years, so I definitely want to make her ride as enjoyable as possible, thus why i (she) went with the smallest size bike possible as she was too concerned about the standover height and didn't like the other size up though it was probably better fit for her.

Yes, it is a coaster brake, but let me tell you the brake sucks. Just bought some brakes and levers from the bay, as the current brake had no stopping power.

that's a bummer. having a coaster brake without using it basically turns into dead weight. :\

Is it a Shimano CB-E110? It'll say right on the brake arm that's strapped to the frame. They produce significant braking forces if the shoes and clutch assembly are not overgreased. A heavy, sticky grease that happens to be perfect for bearings will make the brakes feel weak and ineffective. A thin coat with a light grease is all that's needed for casual riding. I discovered this through tial and error after much frustration. My bikes will lock up the rear with very little effort.

umm....mine is a KT coaster hub, but i was checking all the bearings on the wheelset as they were overtightened straight out of the packaging as the axle was very "gritty", and ended up regreasing the whole hub assembly...

Here's my my fun little run-around thing, I'm pretty happy with its set-up for the time being...

Since there was some talk about gearing a few posts back - in this case 48/16 ratio actually makes for pretty small gear/inches

The wheels are 451mm which is one of the nominal 20" sizes but I think is actually more like 21"(?) and yeah, it can turn on a dime. When it had a riser bar I was hopping around on it, not yet with the drops...

So I'm new here... Here's the bike I ride

So I guess I'm a late transplant from BMX and skateboarding. I already know the ****storm I'll receive for riding brakeless. Even more so for the bike I ride... She's been a sturdy steed and I love flying through my city late at night. I have zero complaints aside from the wheels/tires. I always have fun. Prost!

Nope, it's a trade-off we all have to deal with in order to keep this place work & family safe.

Also, please do not evade the profanity sensor. We will find out and unpleasant things will happen. We paid a lot for it.

The only way to make bf work safe is to make it look less like a bike forum and more like an generic analysis tool. We all browse bf during work, but we're not supposed to be. Loss of productivity and all.

Haha work safe as in the sense of viewing during company sponsored lunch breaks and break times or using company provided wifi.

Judging from the headtube and levers, it's going to be really huge when it grows up and fills out.

You won't get much grief for riding brakeless. Brakeless with NO FOOT RETENTION, however, is moronic and will get you, rightly, lambasted.
