Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Is there is just something weirdly awesome about the 1st picture that I love. I really need to know what is going on in the 2nd picture though.

If we wanted to move cycling forward we would....

we we have options.

Have had options ...for a long time.

Options that look damn good.

And are faster - but yea f@:k that noise we wanna pay thousands for ha ha, aero frames with tucked cables on which to ride in a non aerodynamic position. Get outa here with your progress!

Ahh the sweet smell of success.

As defined by the appropriate ruling body of course... We aren't anarchists or some kind of independent thinkers are we?

It is due to it being brakeless without foot retention and the owner being unwilling to add foot retention.

Ehhh that is a weaker point. I don't disagree that yes foot retention is helpful I have ridden fixed sans retention and I am still alive. Granted yes I had brakes.

I see a lot of that with the teenage fixie riders in my city. Some swear by it. My LBS refuses to service brakeless bikes with no retention.

It is perfect safe to have a fixed gear with no foot retention as long as it has brakes.

My LBS won't even service fixed gears with no brakes even if they have foot retention. They will only service bikes with two functional brakes (fixed wheel is not a functional brake in their eyes). Their only exception is track specific frames with no place to mount brakes, in which they will assume that the rider has experience riding brakeless if they have that kind of specific frame.
