Anyway, I think it's inevitable that sooner or later your card number gets stolen, no matter how careful you are. My card is never out of my possession, and I rarely use it for online purchases, which are normally by PayPal. So either it got stolen when I swiped it somewhere or some processing center got hacked.

We use the same cc for everything and had the number stolen twice last year...then had to have it replaced again because we shopped at Target. It's a pain, but we didn't really lose anything, just some time to setup autopays everywhere. Still, resetting those a couple of times a year is still better than having to write out a check every month.

I was using my debit card for everything, so the fraudulent charges were made directly to my checking account. Since that account has a lot of autopays, it could have resulted in an overdraft situation if I hadn't caught it in time. Anyway, I went to the bank today, and will be getting a true credit card this time, and will only use the debit card for ATM or cash back type transactions. Plus the credit card is one of those Cash Rewards types, so I will actually save a bit on purchases. The only downside is that I have to remember to pay my monthly card bill on time to avoid late fees. Interestingly, it has a promotional 0% APR for the first year, so I can just pay the minimum due each month for the first year w/o penalty.

I'm still young, and have no experience, but isn't that generally a bad idea? It'll just all bite you in the ass once that year is up, wouldn't it?

Well, it's a bad idea if you have zero savings to cover the end of year balloon payment, and no doubt the credit card companies intend to catch a lot of fish that way. After all, that's how they really make their money. I have more than enough funds in my savings account to cover any bill I might incur.

So basically as long as you have the money to pay it off at the end of that year, it doesn't really matter?

I can't be trusted to put things on my credit card, but my bank has an app that will send a push notification (or I can get a text message) every time a debit or credit hits my account (or however you set it up - i have it to only notify for purchases over $25). This helps me keep an eye on things because I see charges right away. Might be worth seeing if your bank does that! Helps with autopays too, it's nice to have that "oh **** my student loan payment just hit" reminder. :)

Today I watched Melancholia and it was a great movie. I was ready to hate it because I watched Lars Von Trier's latest Nymphomaniac and hated it, but this movie was gold. Plus it has Kirsten Dunst naked and I've been crushing on her since like Jumanji. Dream fulfilled.

Yeah, the debit card is trickier. One nice thing with the credit card, they wipe it clean immediately and you don't have to wait for the bank to sort it out.

We have an airline cc, so we get airline points. Pay for everything, including bills with the cc, and then have the cc paid directly from the bank account - all setup automatically. It's nice because you never have to worry about bills and you're racking up free airline miles in the process. You just have to have a bit of a nest egg to make sure you're not overspending. So you do still have to keep track of the finances a bit, but at least you never have to worry about paying a bill late.

Actually, I'd recommend doing this anytime you get the chance. Paying the minimum payment (on time) on a card that has 0% apr for 12 months, will help build your credit more so than just paying off the card each month. It seems silly, but it shows the banks that you are responsible and pay your bills on time. Then just make sure to pay it all off at the end and you won't have any interest.

Huffandstuff 04-20-14 02:18 PM

I finished up what I could on the bike I just got painted, wheels are just placeholders so I could build it up(gonna probably order some cheapish chrome ones off velomine).

If you're making minimum payments on a credit card, you're probably doing something wrong.

Yeah its an old seventies Japanese bike, I got it for forty bucks and have only spent twenty on parts/headset pressing so far. I just need a bike that I can wear normal shoes in for when I go to shows/dates/parties.

LesterOfPuppets 04-20-14 04:08 PM

Today I went to swap meet. Got there kinda late but still scored a couple seasons worth of STXC tires for $30.

Today I almost bought a road bike, then decided I don't need n+1 when n is a number that is already too high

I blame this forum for my n number being way too high. Over the last 3 years, my n number has become 2n.

I couldn't possibly imagine having as many bikes as you do. Would be rad, though.
