Today I snagged a Craigslist gem. 1976 Schwinn Varsity, 100% showroom stock including the original tires. No rust on the chrome. ;)
Please keep it like this for the sake of bicycle history. :) |
Learned that the grease in the free hub on my new rear wheel is too thick for 9°F. The pawls would not hook up all the time. Must ride fixie next time...

Ride Safe, Joe ive had this problem before with the 28 yr/old freewheel on my fuji in the winter, makes you look like a damn fool waiting for traffic, go to crank out from a stop and pogo your feet out of the pedals like you got a dropped chain |

It's a Varsity. :) It's as rare as a Corolla or a Big Mac.
I don't get it. I've seen a **** ton of green Varsities. Is there something special about that one? |

Nope, not that I'm aware of. It's Schwinn's low end econo-ten speed. Billions served. No lugs, no filets, crudely welded and brazed, no cleanup on many joints. It is cool that it survived all these years without being altered, but I don't consider classic or vintage, just old. It's cool, but not collectable IMO.

+1 They also weigh like 10,000lbs  But it is rare to see one in good condition and can be ridden around in style.
I didn't know this until I went to pick up the bike. ONLY the 26 incher had an aluminum stem, while all the other used steel. Weird. I remembered as a kid everything was steel, so I thought the bike had been modified. I checked the catalogs when I got home, and sure enough. It's kind of elegant, sorta, so I'm going to keep it since it's also the perfect reach. I'll probably tap the bar clamp so I can eliminate the nut, and I'll replace the long quill bolt with a nice allen instead of that john Deere Barn bolt that's in there now. http://www.pedalroom.com/p/1976-schw...ty-22098_4.jpg |
I was bored at work so I finally registered on BF and checked out a lot of bike porn.
I then perused the forums gaining inspiration from all the hardcores still riding in the bitter cold. This reminded me I need to stop being a wimp, man up, and get back to bike commuting...fixed of course. |
Today I did a 25-30ish ride and then ate the biggest burger I could find.
|
I road around a lot today. Pretty much JRAd for like 8 hours.
Life be heavy sometimes. Ordered a buncha parts last parts last night. |

I'm a savior, I'm part of the cure , not the problem. :p |
Today I may have just worked out a deal for some new hoops / power meter for my CAAD
|
I found out my bicycle light fits on the snow blower handle. It works great!
Ride Safe, Joe PS: Got in 18 fixie miles before the snow got deep. |

Replaced the yokozuna on my sqrl's bike with some segmented nokon goodness.
Installation around her cramped cockpit was a walk in the park compared to the installation of the prior; which I literally had to fight. Best part about electronic shifting is you only have to buy the brake kit. :D |
