I'm no century rider, that's for sure. I get bored on the bike after a few hours.

Good tip on the swap meet; I haven't yet gotten into track this year. I'll try to renew my membership and volunteer this weekend; that way I can fulfill the volunteer requirement for discounted velodrome membership pricing, and get first dibs on all the cool stuff!

A few days ago I met up with @hairnet and mtb'd in the Santa Monica mountains in LA and then we got some good burritos. Pretty rad. No pictures though. The other day I rode Mt. Tam in SF. It was okay but not really any singletrack--just a one hour climb up a fire road and then descent. I am currently in Portland and it's great here. You can take the full lane wherever/whenever with no complaints from motorists and there is a ton of cool stuff to ride and good places to eat. The more I travel outside the southeast I further understand the 29+ and adventure touring bike fad. My rigid 29er is making for a good all-around bike right now.

So, in my crash the other day, it turns out that I totaled my training bike. The purple steel centurion that I had put so many miles on and loved so much is toast - a serious dent in the top tube has put it out of alignment. Bummer.

The up side to this, is that I get to play new bike day (!!!), hence the 41 alert. I would like the replacement frame to be the same material (steel), but with a nicer tubeset, configured for more modern componentry and possibly more aggressive. I would like suggestions please; I'm pretty ignorant about this stuff.

I am currently looking at in-production steel road frames with moderately aggressive geometry, and a ~1k price point, which rules out many custom builders. From what I've found online, there is the Gunnar Roadie (top of my price range), all the way down to Surley's Pacer and the Soma Smoothie, which are as cheap as I want to go. The Ritchey Road Logic seems to be a nice compromise between that range at ~1k for the frame and full carbon WCS fork, where the Gunnar is 1k for just a frame.

Can anyone offer me additional suggestions?

I've found a used Rock Lobster (True Temper S3) with perfect dimensions online that looks quite enticing to me, but I want to make sure that I've (mentally) covered all of my bases before I make a big purchase

The Pacer isn't the type of bike you're looking for. It's more of casual road bike. Unfortunately the Smoothie isn't all that light even though it is made with Prestige tubing (or so they call it Tange Prestige) but still a nice frame.

Today I: had 2 flats during today's ride. Welp, my roadie needs new tires. It still feels like I bought those veloflex's just yesterday.
Any suggestions for nice rubber besides the usual suspects?

I've been using tubeless Schwalbe Ones, and they're pretty nice.

I have considered Ti, but not this time around, as I would like to keep the pricepoint around 1k.

In the future, the bike I am building currently (training/primary rider) will be a Ti frame, probably custom made from Holland cycles.

I think a pacer would be money well spent. it's cheap, tough as nails and all around a badass frame. if you have a dedicated race bike, you cant go wrong with the pacer. I built one up for my ex-girl recently and it's got 33mm knobbies on it, currently. the disco tomato is pretty sweet also- it's a kinda deep red with gold flake in it. and you'd only spend like half your budget on it.....

im addicted to fat tires and i was gonna powdercoat the leader a sparkly purple, plus i seem to be interested in spending a lot more time offroad these days
