Today I rode 20 miles on my new (to me) road bike. Gears are silly.

Tonight I unexpectedly KOM'd a fun local dirt climb on my SS MTB, by a pretty good margin. #feelsgoodman

ate **** yesterday.
6 months of riding Time's clipless system thru my unintended use and abuse with not a single unclip, until yesterday. middle of a whipskid, drive right foot pops out, over the handlebars go, managed to land on my knees + hands... n here comes by bike landing on top of me. full fingered gloves n helmet so im fine, and so is the bareknuckle. back to straps for the street. |
I have never attempted to do a whipskid, but don't you tend to move your heels sideways when doing them, which is the way you unclip on a clipless setup ?

I'm still shopping around for kit. I was unaware that Maap's online prices are in AUD and not USD. I've heard their stuff is even better than rapha, so I kinda wanna try that, but I want to see what Black Sheep's new season is gonna look like.

I've been riding around with no foot retention on mountain bike pedals cos they grip my shoes. I've got a pair of platform pedals and a set of YNOT straps on the way though.
I'm afraid to go clipless for all the reasons mentioned. |
The intimidation factor of clipless goes away VERY quickly.
|
Clipless was definitely really easy to learn and came pretty natural. I still probably wouldn't ride clipless and brakeless at the same time.
.... yes, brakeless is dumb. |
I get scared when I ride extended distances with flat pedals. I probably don't have the best technique anymore, and my feet go everywhere on the upstroke
|
i HATE using non clipless pedals, once i clicked in i could never go back. not being able to pull up makes me feel useless, and straps move/give way too much for me to feel secured in the pedal

http://www.pedalroom.com/p/fuji-royale-6695_14.jpg I have done it fixed too and I think it is a lot of fun, but this isn't on "go fast" bikes. |

I ride my bike around plenty with no foot retention, it's always with the girlfriend when she wants to go put for dinner and drinks kind of thing.
I really want to like clips/straps but I hate how much play you have. |

YNOT - Pedal Strap
Those look like really retentiony straps to me and pretty much everything sucks less than toe clips. |

The straps are adjustable, ya know.

Oh and spd pedals double as a bottle opener too.

Me too. I sometimes ride my fixed commuter without foot retention on really short, flat trips (less than a mile to the store or to pickup food), it is weirdly fun to try and back pressure brake without being secured to the pedals. I usually don't need to use my front brake still, but wouldn't try it without one.
|
at my old job i would take the track bike half mile down the road to the store for breakfast during my morning break and just use my regular shoes on my clipless pedals, always went like .4 mph because i hated the lack of control i had.
was gonna put straps/clips on the bridgestone till i realized i have some unused time atacs in the parts box so praise cheesus i dont have to |

On a side note, Heavy Pedal has a handful of kits marked down to $85 on their website. |
