Is it just me or do 26.0 stem clamps always seem to be just a hair too small?

Mumonkan 10-09-15 06:49 PM

Took my new Dolan to the shop today to have the headset installed. Also sold an old pair of cranks and got my car's registration up to date. Gonna go for a ride now that the obnoxious sun is gone.

We only manufacture so many sets a year because each crank set takes 3-4 days of manufacturing to complete and several hours of polishing. This causes an unreasonable amount of back orders. So to free up machine time for new products and stop delays we had to make the call."

bingo!

What if 26mm stems were just a scheme to get cyclists to buy more 25.4mm stems?

Meanwhile I have to use beer can shims with my two Nitto 26.0 stems.

seau grateau 10-10-15 03:34 AM

I was running a Cinelli Alter for a while which really hugged the handlebar, and the Syntace stem I'm using on my new bike does it even more so. The clamp on the stem goes clearly beyond a 180 degree section, so I have to actually screw on the faceplate to get the bar actually in the clamp. I don't get it.

Raining (again) in ATL so today I did the brakes on my 99 CRV.

(Remotely bike related because it carries my bikes)

The thing is so easy to work on. The only complaint I have is that whomever maintained it before I bought it apparently never heard of JIS and every phillips head screw on the thing is butchered. I had to grind the head off one of the rotor retention screws with a dremel and was able to twist out what remained with channel-locks.

Bosch lifetime rotors, lifetime Wagner pads, all new clips, springs, shims and sliders/bolts for about $180. The thing is almost cheaper to maintain than a bike.

Today I found out about this bay area ebay seller:
nbirn2103 on eBay

His selection of modern to vintage framesets/ bikes is seriously drool-worthy :twitchy:
3renshos all the way to a OG cinelli laser and possibly everything in between that's worth mentioning. Even has a GT pulse up for grabs.

Nagrom_ 10-10-15 02:53 PM

If I was a fan of vintage GTs and if that fit I'd be seriously considering making an offer on that.

Nagrom_ 10-10-15 02:54 PM

Oh wait.

I'd hit him up with a cash in person offer if he's down for that.

Today its raining, all day. Drove to my LBS and took the owner/mechanic/salesman some beer. He likes IPAs and I found some Dogfish head 90 (which is not always easy to find here). Its too cold and wet to drink Lager today.

seau grateau 10-10-15 03:27 PM

Dogfish 90 is the beeeeest.

Huffandstuff 10-10-15 07:31 PM

I apparently raced like crap today, but I at least got to bunnyhop some barriers.

TenSpeedV2 10-10-15 11:38 PM

Got a flat on the ride home from work tonight. Nice 2 mile walk because lazy. Seriously, had it been the front, I would have messed with it, but nope, the rear. It's always the rear isn't it?

seau grateau 10-11-15 04:27 AM

Built up my Dolan. It's nice. It wants to go fast.

Leukybear 10-11-15 03:43 PM

NJS frames are silly.

A friend's killer deal on a NJS frameset = 27mm seat tubed & 110mm spaced 8mm narrow track ends for slotted axle sillyness.

As you can imagine, all of the standard stuff he bought was "close" to fitting.

Apparently, his phils fit those 8mm narrow track ends after robbing the washers from the front and springing the frame the few mm's. Essentially giving him phil's "keirin" rear hubs sans 110mm spacers:

50voltphantom 10-12-15 07:40 AM

(Yesterday) It was 86 degrees here in South Dakota in mid-October. I went on a 54 mile ride and nearly blew up since I haven't been putting tons of miles in since RAGBRAI.
