I tried all 3 normal metals, and I'm just not digging it. Too compliant for my style of riding I guess. Flexes so much whenever I'm out of the saddle its a little unnerving. The SS evo is gonna be pretty sweet and plenty light too. If anyone wants the Dean frameset or Rock Lobster...

Fo free?

I have never owned a carbon bike (yet). When I had the money, I got a Titanium frame instead and have been very pleased with it. But i am still curious about carbon and still have one on my wish list.

My issue has been that the only carbon bikes I have ridden (quick test ride) have been high end racing road bikes and that is not my thing anymore. I may have missed my window.

TMonk 12-04-15 09:11 AM

I'm into owning steel or Ti for my daily driver, everyday training road bike that sees the majority of my riding. I like to durability/longevity, simplicity, and classy aesthetic of a steel/Ti frame. For my race/go-fast bike, I'm willing to take a sacrifice all of those things for the performance of a alu or carbon frame.

I feel the same way wrt to wheel choice - regular alloy wheels on my heavily used ride, and carbon for the race bike.

Also, @Muffin Man, please be aware that ride quality attributes like "stiff" and "compliant" have as much to do with frame construction and material choice.

Back in my glory days when I was a sponsored athlete (2011-2012, Spy Elite Cycling) I was given a crabon frame to ride all season long:

I hated this bike. Super flexy and too "compliant", esp under sprinting power. The imperfectly molded BB30 shell also pissed me off and squeaked like no other. Fortunately for me it was a win, as I ended up buying it from Spy for $2k instead of giving it back, then parting it out and making bank. My current bike is wayyyy stiffer:

Just some things to consider.

What I don't like about the alu is that it is rather uncomfortable - doesn't soak up the road like carbon/steel or Ti does.

When I was in college, the LBS owner would occasionally let my borrow his new Tarmac SL2 (yeah I know, I'm old). That thing was nice. That's kinda what I want now, a no-frills, "regular" carbon race bike.

Muffin Man has been spending too much time in the 41.

Today I'm loving my new job, pretty much double the pay for the same work, can't wait for March when I move and get a 50 mile RT commute, should help get the base miles I need to do well in non sprint events.

That sound like good advice for choosing a wife :).

Haha, it could probably be applied to quite a few things. I'm doing the same thing researching cars at the moment...looking for something small but with plenty of horsepower and then not break the bank at the same time.

Muffin Man 12-04-15 03:02 PM

TMonk yeah it doesn't help that my Dean is all skinny tubes, with a 1in ht. This thing wasn't built for stiffness at all.

I actually don't even go to the 41 anymore. I'm starting to browse wrightweenies tho...

Did you know a kalloy uno stem only weighs 110g for a 130mm stem, and costs under $30?! Reported to be pretty stiff too

I know that I have 110mm Kalloy Uno -17 and Ritchey WCS -6 (alloy, few years old) stems and the Ritchey is noticeably lighter in my hand. I think I paid $25 shipped. eBay rules for that sort of thing.

TMonk 12-04-15 03:43 PM

WCS is Richey's premier product line, so pricing is generally going to be higher than the Kalloy Uno tier.

TMonk 12-04-15 03:44 PM

I've become quite the fan of Ritchey products as of late. Stems, posts, forks, bars, that kind of thing. My new MTB frame is Ritchey as well.

Muffin Man 12-04-15 04:20 PM

128g for 130mm stem, sorry.

Still pretty good tho once you acetone the logos off

seau grateau 12-04-15 05:17 PM

Ugh, 128!?! What the ****!??! ARE YOU SERIOUS I ALMOST PUT THAT **** ON MY BIKE WHAT THE ****

seau grateau 12-04-15 05:19 PM

Also today I bought a new phone for the first time in like 5 years.

Mumonkan 12-04-15 05:34 PM

not bad considering the ENVE carpet fibre stems are 1g/mm

AristoNYC 12-04-15 05:34 PM

Today I did a "relatively" fast 28 miles while listening to STP to honor Scott Weiland.

SCK 12-04-15 05:56 PM

Went on a 33 mile ride on the Zephyr before I disappear into the abyss to study for finals. Changed up my normal ride loop, ended up in a town I wouldn't have planned on riding into -- got some odd stares while I was there (it was clear I was an outsider). All in all, it was a good ride.

There's a guy selling a 100mm locally for $170 but he hasn't gotten any hits. I'm waiting another week before I make him an offer. Those stems are ****ing pricey.

I listened to a pile of STP today too.

Ritchey > Thomson imo, I really dig their cross bike they have but I'm not able to get a frame for a long time.

I totally know right? Thomson doesn't even have a cadence collab stem!

Sacrilege.
