45 miles in 25 degrees for the new year, wearing jeans and a light zip cotton hoodie (started with a light down vest but got hot and took it off). Felt great except for a bit of sweating/freezing/almost-chafing in the saddle area near the end.

For me one of the biggest benefits of switching to fixed was the feeling that, no matter what I'm otherwise wearing, I'm ready to ride. Maybe even more than the fact that I just love riding my steel fixed gear compared to my carbon geared bike, it's the regular clothes aesthetic that's been responsible for getting me far more miles and far more enjoyment out of riding since making the switch.

It's all psychological, of course--no one forces you to gear up when you ride a geared bike (and I was always pretty minimalist anyway)--but for me the compatibility of my bike style with my personal style makes all the difference. YMMV, and if you dig the comfort or aesthetic of cycling-specific clothes, that's chill too.

14 miles around town on my first fixed gear excursion. I am happy with the pace I can climb on the small bridges in my town. I can feel different muscles in my legs working.

Does this mean we all get free joints now?

Haha, I'm in the process of mailing everyone edibles!

I would wear all of those! :)

I say just wear what you like. I like kits on the road bike or anytime I'm putting in longer miles. I feel more comfortable and enjoy wearing them. I look sexy in spandex! On big mtb rides, I usually wear baggies with chamois shorts. If I'm bumming around, I usually wear whatever I'm already wearing.

Congrats Ed!

Today I signed a new lease for a sweet house and bought yet another Steamroller for $150 :thumb:

Dannihilator 01-02-17 03:15 PM

Congrats,
Today I am being lazy.

This week will be the 9th week in a row that I've gotten tattooed. Trying to finish my body suit so I can get back on the bike! (half a leg left).

I'm going to vicariously bike through all of you in the interim.

motrheadsroadie 01-02-17 04:38 PM

those heavy pedal kits are kinds of like, really, really, nasty looking.

Yep, cruising to the shops to grab a 6 pack or post a letter, whatever I am in at the time on whatever bike is closest to the door.
Short MTB ride on my dually, maybe a pair of baggies and tech jersey.
XC MTB or long road ride, I will rock the lycra.

Cotton all the way for me. 100%. No blends, ever. never had even the mildest skin irritation on a hot 50 mile ride.

100 degrees out and I sweat. Mother Nature's magic air conditioning to cool my body. Shirt gets damp, stays damp and keeps me cool. The last thing I want to be in 100 degree temps is dry and overheating.

I'm gonna have to go ahead and disagree with you there.

NameChange 01-03-17 12:15 PM

Today I dropped my bike off at the shop to get the headset pressed in and I got them to order me a new bb so I should be getting it back tomorrow

franswa 01-03-17 01:50 PM

Today I did 41 miles in lycra and I was comfortable AF. No rash.

Ditto!

motrheadsroadie 01-03-17 02:05 PM

to be fair, a dude in full lycra riding around on one of those electroforged gaspipe american bottom bracket things with 3 different types of handlebar grips/tape would be total overkill.

franswa 01-03-17 03:24 PM

True. Overalls are the appropriate attire for such bikes.

TimothyH 01-03-17 05:21 PM

Cotton is one of the worst fabrics one can wear in the heat.

Cotton is hydrophilic. It attracts, absorbs and holds onto water. A fabric which holds onto water does readily release it into the atmosphere so does not provide evaporative cooling, or provides it at a greatly reduced rate compared to other fabrics of similar weight.

A hydrophobic fabric does not absorb and hold onto water but passes it through and releases it easily so it can evaporate and cool. A hydrophobic fabric is what is needed.

This isn't something I made up. This is basic ninth grade science.

Today I wore Levi Commuter pants and a button down shirt to work, but wore lycra on the trainer this morning.

:)
