Today I got my frame from the powder coater.
Yeah, aluminum welds are ugly. Now I can stop playing with with wheel bearings and build this thing so it can get back on the road. https://www.dropbox.com/s/bhvtaua499...t.001.jpg?dl=1 https://www.dropbox.com/s/3itpp08jsq...t.002.jpg?dl=1 https://www.dropbox.com/s/tc2769puy5...t.007.jpg?dl=1 https://www.dropbox.com/s/n1iuicw0ci...t.004.jpg?dl=1 |

The problem isn't just grip strength of the cage although that is a consideration. It also has to do with the shape of the bottle relative to the cage. This isn't my information. This comes from lots of experience in the triathlon community. I got grief over wanting bottles with proper grooves. Here is why.
100% right. :thumb: The bottle in this picture below has a rounded shape to the groove. It does not engage the bottle cage lip properly. By the way, it is an old bottle used for parts cleaning just as an example. https://www.dropbox.com/s/7769shiqw9...ge002.JPG?dl=1 Contrast the generic no name bottle above with a higher quality bottle below. The bottle and cage have a complimentary shape, the cage is able to properly grip the bottle. This setup does not eject. https://www.dropbox.com/s/9g061uzlf4...ge001.jpg?dl=1 Both pictures are high quality Zipp Speed Cages. much less effort is required to pull the top bottle out of the cage than is the bottom bottle. The bottom bottle clicks in. If you want grip strength though then the best is going to be XLAB Gorilla Cage or the Gorilla XT. Not cheap but the XT has the highest grip of any cage out there. But yeah, check the fit of your bottles to the lip in the cage. You may have to adjust bottle and cage brand/type to get a better interface between the cage lip and the bottle groove. -Tim-

What was your preferred mode of transporting a bottle in all that testing? I've tried the two fish strap on cage but it never stays put on non-round tubing. Recently it shifted while riding and I killed it with a down stroke...

My bike is pretty small diameter round tubing & I have some occasional slight slippage/twisting problems (and even once tore the velcro strap trying to get it really tight) but nothing like yours.

Much appreciated. I'll see how my Purist bottles interface with these cages when I get home. I used my large Camelbak Podiums this morning.
Twofish seems to work excellent on round tubes and even side-mounted on oval fork blades, as long as they're dry, if it's raining things get interesting. I'm going to put a piece of clear grip tape on my downtube to try and combat this. |

I tried two different saddle mounted butt rocket cage holders. No matter what I tried, mount, cage or bottle, I launched every single time. Even tried the Specialized Zee side entry cages thinking that would prevent a launch. Nope. Lost a few bottles and damaged two others. Decided to remove the mounts and throw them in the trash where they belong.

i had the profile aquarack and never lost a single bottle

XLAB Gorilla cages and Aquashot bottles. Done.
If you only need one bottle then get the Delta 200 system - mount, cage and bottle. Delta 200 http://xlab-usa.com/media/rokgallery...90b4a1cd86.jpg Gravel is out of bounds though. Might want to check gravelcyclist.com and see what those guys use. |
I use the Tacx behind the saddle bottle holder as well, because my 80's Raleigh commuter I've posted here doesn't have any cage mounts on the down tube or seat tube.
Quick link to pic: https://www.flickr.com/photos/rattle...posted-public/ I've never had a problem with a bottle ejecting, and part of the paths I take are pretty rough, but it's not gravel. These are the cages I use: https://www.amazon.com/Delta-Inox-Bi.../dp/B000ACAML0 Two mounted. I do have a problem with the mount being a little bulky on the underside of the saddle, making it quite difficult to smosh a saddlebag up there. So I'minterested in that Minura double holder y'all are talking about. Can anyone share a pic of their bike with it on? google image search wasn't the most helpful. I'm not sure I like the angle of them. |

It helps that I have my saddle nearly slammed backward on the rails but I have plenty of room and then some using the Minoura and a Jandd mini mountain wedge.
I was referring to the Tacx one I currently have making it difficult as there is a big plastic arm that is right in the middle under the saddle. |
I also have a problem with the Tacx mount tipping down because of the weight of full bottles hitting bumps. |
Are those all the same? The angle of mounting is adjustable? I'm interested in the bottom one.
|
They are the same. The angle is not adjustable and depends entirely on the angle of your saddle rails. I could not bend the mount by hand but not for lack of trying. Contemplated a vise or heating but tried the Tacx first.
The Tacx did not tip like Sci Guy's. The mount however, is cheap sheet metal and flexed as I tightened the bolts. Was not satisfied. I tried an expensive antique T.A handlebar mounted cage but didn't like the look and it scratched my new Nitto bar so I got mad and threw it away. Dug it out of the garbage the next day and sold it on ebay. I tried a Minoura BH-60 (22mm bar only) and an SBH-80, both of which I still have and will send free to anyone who wants either. PM me your address. I tried the Twofish and thought about trying a really expensive Rube Goldberg XLAB X-Wing setup but they didn't come in chrome. :p Check this site out --> Adding Water Bottle Cages to Bicycles without Braze At the end of the day I just put a 25oz bottle in my jersey pocket. Works every time. |

Just don't drink any water and stick to the alleged bike mantra of HTFU.

fun fact: athletes back in the day used to specifically not drink water during races, it was basically cheating
