I received my Minoura butt-rocket mount. It's so much better than the stock pic would have you believe. Solid as a rock.

I had the same Minoura mount. Can't remember if it comes with nylock nuts or not. I think it does.

If not then get some from the hardware store otherwise they will loosen up on you during a ride and the thing will start rattling around.

I also ran the Tacx mount for a while. Nice and light but not as solid as the Minoura. I had to replace the nuts with nylocks because it kept loosening up.

I decided to count and I saw 5 Kilo TTs on the road/locked up around town today.

Had a good session at the track. I've succeeded in not doing anything super sketchy my first few times out.

Today (well, yesterday now for me) I worked 9 hours and rode ~3 hours of z2/3 intervals.


On 3 hours of sleep. Feels like I've been maimed.


The other bad news is that I've been falling super hard into being a roadie******bag. :( I commute on my fg every day but I haven't taken it out in weeks and weeks I've been so busy doing road rides. And I can't wait to race in the spring. I've been posting in Road cycling on BF, even. The nails are in the coffin, boys.

This one came with lock washers on the mounting bolts, some Loctite is probably a good idea too.

So yeah, first ride with a bottle in each cage; One small bump and I launch one bottle into the middle of the street. A little while later I hit some washboard gravel and both bottles instantly eject. I need sort this problem out ASAP. Going to try bending the cages a little and putting some grip tape on them as well.

What angle are the bottles tilted at? I'm assuming this is the only bottle cage, on the bike no? I'd probably just use a rubber band or something to keep the bottle from ejecting but it could be hard when you're on the move..

Maybe try a different kind of bottle that fits the cage better or visa versa?

I'm a sucker for little doo-dads like carry-along tools, small bags, bottle-cages & mounts, etc...

Since my daily rider is a track frame without built-in cage braze-ons, I have tried quite a few different add-on mounts over the years. I used (actually still have the thing sitting somewhere around my place) a Minoura double butt-rocket mount that I put cheapo Sunlite cages I had squeezed down pretty good onto it that never once ejected a bottle in the couple months I used it.

Changed to something else for no other reason than I never got completely comfortable reaching behind me for a bottle while moving...

The problem isn't just grip strength of the cage although that is a consideration. It also has to do with the shape of the bottle relative to the cage. This isn't my information. This comes from lots of experience in the triathlon community. I got grief over wanting bottles with proper grooves. Here is why.

The bottle in this picture below has a rounded shape to the groove. It does not engage the bottle cage lip properly. By the way, it is an old bottle used for parts cleaning just as an example.

Contrast the generic no name bottle above with a higher quality bottle below. The bottle and cage have a complimentary shape, the cage is able to properly grip the bottle. This setup does not eject.

Both pictures are high quality Zipp Speed Cages. much less effort is required to pull the top bottle out of the cage than is the bottom bottle. The bottom bottle clicks in.

If you want grip strength though then the best is going to be XLAB Gorilla Cage or the Gorilla XT. Not cheap but the XT has the highest grip of any cage out there. But yeah, check the fit of your bottles to the lip in the cage. You may have to adjust bottle and cage brand/type to get a better interface between the cage lip and the bottle groove.

What was your preferred mode of transporting a bottle in all that testing? I've tried the two fish strap on cage but it never stays put on non-round tubing. Recently it shifted while riding and I killed it with a down stroke... :cry:

The bottles sit near-vertical. This mount is for bottles #3 & 4 on the bike for a 100k gravel race this weekend.

The cages I put on yesterday are well-worn and were slightly bent open. I just tweaked them back by hand and they grip much more firmly now. We'll see how the commute home goes this afternoon.

I'm not sure what is more insta-rage inducing, having earbuds yanked from your ears by a dropped phone or ejecting two bottles off your bike due to a small bump :lol:
