Texas has a total eclipse in 2024.

That's a tough ride.

Yesterday I did a little 18 mile afternoon loop ride and no matter what direction I went it felt like I had a tail wind. Flat ground felt like downhill and the hills felt easy. Weird. I'll take it.

Last Saturday I did a duathlon: back-to-back 5k run, 20k ride, and 5k run again. It was my first race of this kind or anything like it, and I had lots of fun.

The course is mostly flat, and at only 12 miles, is almost a sprint, so I figured I could do it well on a FG. I rode my Parallax, with 49x16 and bullhorns. Turned out to be a good choice!

At 1:31:26, I finished 4th overall and 2nd in my age group. Not as impressive when you realize we had a small field of only 13 people competing. Still, I felt good about myself.

There's a very similar race near me that I didn't get to do this year but definitely want to try. Good job!

Today (just after midnight) I finally finished changing the alternator in my wife's Jetta (behind my right shoulder). It took about a week of incremental progress as I removed the air compressor pump and myriad pulley brackets using unnecessarily-specialized bits I had to go out and buy, before I could get the old alternator out. Installing the new one didn't take as long, but it brought its own frustrations. A steady succession of beers and blue language aided the process.

**** cars.

Which motor was it? The 5 cyl or the 4 banger?

Ive had my fair share of working on Audi's and Vw's in the past and.. I don't miss it at all. Such a PITA:crash:

The 5-cylinder 2.5. We're looking to replace it with another Subaru after driving it into the ground. :thumb:

Thinking of swapping out the orange bits for purple bits on the new steed now that it has black cranks on it.

Been struggling most of the day trying to craft my elevator pitch :crash:

I suggest everyone that missed this year's to make an effort in 2024. One of the few things in life that is all it's cracked up to be. :thumb:

Today I took the singlespeed out for a coffee and grocery run, then banged out a quick one hour ride on the road bike. Riding multiple bikes in the same day rules.

Started a new second job, only doing part time in the morning though. So just a few 15/16 hour days.

Doing that currently. 2 days already this week and this Saturday as well. It's at a bike shop so at least it is fun. I do everything but wrench on bikes since I am not a mechanic. Selling bikes all the way to sweeping the floor and receiving the order every week.

TenSpeedV2 08-25-17 07:28 AM

Today I swapped back to drops on the fixed gear. Gonna give this a try since this bike has turned into a commuter.

UltraManDan 08-25-17 08:08 AM

Swapped from 44cm drops to 38cm drops and a 100mm stem to an 80mm stem and what a world of difference!! Much more comfortable for me and I feel the handling is a bit better.

Also switched back to 48/17 gearing and dropped a link. Now the back wheel is a bit more #tukt, which I hear is a good thing. lol

After putting 1200 miles on my bike, I think I finally have it dialed in for fit. Now to upgrade wheels.

hairnet 08-25-17 10:19 AM

I'm trying to decided whether to get an SLX or XT crank for my mountain bike. XT is available in 180mm which I currently use. looking at about $30 difference

Go for XT. From what I hear that's a very solid group.

Dave

hairnet 08-25-17 04:21 PM

theyre both solid as ****. At this point it is aesthetics and whether or not I think 180mm is worth doing again.

johnnytheboy 08-26-17 02:25 PM

today i did 100 miles on the mr. pink. pretty much did it solo...was in a group for around 2 miles. did it in sub 5 hours. pretty happy. now time for the pool.

UltraManDan 08-26-17 02:42 PM

Tonight I have my first bicycle race ever. A small, local, fixed gear crit race. Gonna be fun! Wish me luck!!
