I went mountain biking with Rick back then. He could pick his way down a steep, rocky trail like a trials rider.

What ride are you guys doing on Wednesday morning? Where does it start? I have an appointment mid afternoon so I took the day off.

It's a great ride, that starts off as a pretty large group. Starts here at the Village Coffee Roaster at 8:30 sharp.

First break is in Westlake, after which the people who need to get to work or just need a shorter ride, will head back to the ride start (or home). But a small group will almost always head out to the beach via Las Virgenes/Malibu Canyon. Then down PCH to Topanga.

Now, if you want some extra climbing miles, I suggest you drive to the ride start. If you do, most of the pack comes back Topanga/Old Topanga, resulting in about 58 miles. Back to your car by around 1:00-1:15. If you ride your bike from the valley to the ride start, there are usually 2 or 3 riders who don't take Topanga, and instead keep riding PCH down to Santa Monica, and then ride back up Sepulveda to the valley. More miles, not as much climbing, and probably gets you home about the same time.

Cool thanks, I dont mind riding there. Packing the bike is really annoying.

VanceMac 07-25-07 05:53 PM

Keith, Sarah, and I (and probably a few others) are heading up Big T and AC tomorrow. Let me know if anyone is interested. We're leaving the rec center on Foothill about 8am.

merider1 07-25-07 05:54 PM

Must be nice to have your weekdays free.

urbanknight 07-25-07 07:13 PM

I will have my weekdays free for the second half of August, so I plan on joining you guys for some morning rides. It would sure beat the heat of my 3pm rides right now.

Looks like Saturday's ride is starting at the Commons, out through Hidden Valley, around Pt Mugu, and back Encinal. Everyone welcome.

I'll give it a shot -- thanks John!

Start at 8:00. I'm not sure if the exact route has been decided.

herbm 07-26-07 09:12 AM

A few of us SFVBC'ers are going to ride Oxnard/Ventura to SB and back Sat...part 3 harbor, part cool breeze...
Anyone interested is welcome...
Probably 2 routes...1 flatter and about 60 miles - 2nd with a bit more elevation and 77 miles...but both are pretty mild....

Ok. See ya there.
Is this a birthday ride?
Do we need pointy hats?

ovoleg 07-26-07 09:24 AM

Is that 8:00 ride going to be fun?

valleygirl 07-26-07 10:50 AM

Yes, Pointy hats is a must. The route is out to Hidden Valley, down Portero, over to PCH, up Encinal or some other climb to be decided and then back. I know John you hate PCH , but this will be the northern section , not so bad there.
And yes Ovo, the ride will be fun, because it's my birthday!

mkadam68 07-26-07 05:12 PM

My boys and I will be doing the #1 ride again. Anyone else wanna help me learn these youngsters how to pack ride?

I would say yes, but I'm reluctant to get dropped by an 11-year old again. Actually, I'm off to Vegas for a long weekend. No bike, but I'm sure I'll find other ways to occupy my time.

I am ready for some Fun.

I am sick now for more than 2 weeks and didn't ride much at all (I am just very wick and work from home most of the time).
I thought to do a level-3 or 4, but if we have a birthday fun ride... and it is not a century with 6000ft, I will come.
BTW, I mapped the level-4 ride, and I never rode Las Flores Canyon Rd, which look kind of scary on the elevation image. Vance, Steve, and to all other mouten goats, is this one a killer or similar to latigo?

Shai, don't go to Las Flores if your legs aren't in top shape, it's very steep. It's not long, but has some 23% grade and can hurt you.

Las Flores is quite a bit steeper than Latigo. There's a good mile in there where the grade hovers around 15% and it hits 20% in several places. Latigo also has the flat/downhill sections which Las Flores definitely does not have.

edit, +1 what Big John said, he beat me to it

Would you be going over Mulholland on the way to Hidden Valley?

{whimper} That's one of my favorite routes. I know I'm not up to that long of a ride yet, but I will be out there with you eventually!

I'm trying to decide if I have the time and the guts to try the 40 mile ride. If I'm needed at home earlier (or my knee is complaining), I might join you guys again. I can teach them (and you if you haven't tried it) to bump elbows without going down. Maybe shoulders too, but that depends on how well they do with the elbows.

ovoleg 07-27-07 09:08 AM

Las Flores is wussy, I think you should ride it sometime Shai. I think its about the same steepness as Mountain Gate. Its just kinda long.

I think you can do it with your gearing...pretty easily. Just don't wuss out and you'll be fine.

I'm not sure. I kind of doubt it, but that will be decided in the parking lot most likely. I'm trying to keep this ride cooler than most, so we might hightail it to the beach.
