Hello
I grew up in SFV (have since moved for college) and am back in town for the summer. I'm fairly, or entirely new to road cycling and was looking for a group to ride with. Considering my amateur status, could i keep up with yall? If im not a member, can i still ride? Thanks

ovoleg 07-23-07 03:28 PM

You can still ride and you are welcome to come. The club has many different skill sets and I am sure that you will find the right one.
1-Relatively slow pace, more social and casual
2-A bit faster but still a social pace and lost of regroups and few breaks.
3+fast, generally they will wait at the top of climbs but depending on how slow you are, they might not.

I would consider trying the 1-2 ride just to get a feel for it.

Come out Saturday!

Diatad 07-23-07 03:37 PM

i will be out of town from tomorrow until next tuesday, i noticed monday/wednesday rides on the website. is that happening next week?

ovoleg 07-23-07 03:40 PM

I've never done those :( sorry can't comment

It might be best if you try the Saturday level 1 or 2 rides first . Monday goes over Santa Sue rather brisky and the Wednesday 8:30 ride can be very fast. However the Wednesday ride that leaves at 8:15 might be Ok for starters.

How new are you to road cycling? I waited until I could do a pretty steady 15-mph average for 20+ miles before I tried riding with the SFVBC (two weeks ago) and have done pretty well on my three rides. I'm definitely on the slower side, especially with climbing (I suck at that), but have always managed to stay with some part of the group. Each of the three rides has wound up with an average of 14-15 mph.

On the other hand, I rode the other day with a friend who also is very new to cycling. He is still at the stage where he is struggling with clipping in and out of pedals, doesn't have great control of the bike, and struggled with a sustained pace of more than 10-12 mph. I recommended that he work more on his control and speed before trying to ride with a group like the SFVBC. In a line, he would have been a disaster (the multiple falls stopping and starting would have taken out several other riders).

LOL. Not quite. I'm a disaster on rollerblades.

That is excellent advice. I think he should get real comfortable with control before riding in a group.

When my son was doing velodrome training at Encino, one of the first things they practiced was bumping into each other and hitting wheels. Once you realize that a lot of these collisions are recoverable if you don't panic, you have a lot less chance of taking out a crowd. It would be nice if your friend could take a bump comfortably as well.

Even a group of one. He ran into me while I was stopped at an intersection.

J - I'm wondering if I've seen you at the ride start recently. Any chance we can get you to contribute here:

I don't have any recent pictures (either on bike or off), but hopefully you've seen me. I am a short woman, have a brown ponytail, and ride with a blue camelbak.

Is this you... er, your camelbak... on the extreme right? :)

Looks like I need to do better job on capturing more of the riders...

1989. He was 8. He was just taking classes and practice runs. Too young to compete, Actually, too young to take classes as you were supposed to be 10. Rick let him in though. But, it was a real struggle for him to keep up in the pacelines of the 14 year olds. He did get great experience from it all though.

btw. do you remember Mariano Friedick? He was a junior then and just mopping up the field each race. He would finish 1/2 lap or more ahead of the field. Phenomenal rider.

Id say im a road cycling infant. At school i rode a 1976 Ross (crap) and 4 days ago i picked up my first "real" road bike, a Lemond Versailles. I finished my first 20 mile ride in about an hour and a half and today's 35 took roughly 2.75. I'm definitely awful at climbing, im usually in the lowest gear if its anything over 6-8%. But it's never so bad i have to stop. I usually run 5 or 6 days a week so my stamina is above average. I guess the pedals are the biggest concern, seeing as i now have 2 days of experience under my belt. Both times i have fallen because of a shift in my weight while standing on my right foot and not being able to click out and away on my left foot in time to prevent the bicycle from falling over. However, getting the pedal in when i start going is no problem. I think i have good control over the bike, but thats like a 16 year old telling you what a great driver he is . I might not have had enough exposure to really know (the pedals could be the same story). Anyway, thanks for the advice, I'll keep going solo for couple hundred miles and see where I'm at.

Yep. My calf and camelbak. I couldn't check that picture from work, because Shai's site is blocked by Websense. Hmm . . . what might be on there?

Yes I remember him. He was a cat2 by the time I started racing (1993) and was still pretty fast. Nice guy too, always willing to chat with us juniors and give us advice. Also, I'm assuming you're referring to Rick Denmon? I often wonder what happened to a lot of the guys who were so friendly back then.

yes, Rick Denman. I thought he did a great job with the youngsters.

I think Mariano is with Rock Racing now. He was with Toyota United last year. http://www.cyclingnews.com/photos.ph...066/sw06-WP_08
