How many rollerbladers do you think you can take out in 20 laps?

Hello
I grew up in SFV (have since moved for college) and am back in town for the summer. I'm fairly, or entirely new to road cycling and was looking for a group to ride with. Considering my amateur status, could i keep up with yall? If im not a member, can i still ride? Thanks |
You can still ride and you are welcome to come. The club has many different skill sets and I am sure that you will find the right one.
1-Relatively slow pace, more social and casual 2-A bit faster but still a social pace and lost of regroups and few breaks. 3+fast, generally they will wait at the top of climbs but depending on how slow you are, they might not. I would consider trying the 1-2 ride just to get a feel for it. Come out Saturday! |
i will be out of town from tomorrow until next tuesday, i noticed monday/wednesday rides on the website. is that happening next week?
|
I've never done those :( sorry can't comment

He is still at the stage where he is struggling with clipping in and out of pedals, doesn't have great control of the bike, and struggled with a sustained pace of more than 10-12 mph. I recommended that he work more on his control and speed before trying to ride with a group like the SFVBC. In a line, he would have been a disaster (the multiple falls stopping and starting would have taken out several other riders). |

How new are you to road cycling? I waited until I could do a pretty steady 15-mph average for 20+ miles before I tried riding with the SFVBC (two weeks ago) and have done pretty well on my three rides. I'm definitely on the slower side, especially with climbing (I suck at that), but have always managed to stay with some part of the group. Each of the three rides has wound up with an average of 14-15 mph.

When my son was doing velodrome training at Encino, one of the first things they practiced was bumping into each other and hitting wheels. Once you realize that a lot of these collisions are recoverable if you don't panic, you have a lot less chance of taking out a crowd. It would be nice if your friend could take a bump comfortably as well. |

That is excellent advice. I think he should get real comfortable with control before riding in a group.

I don't have any recent pictures (either on bike or off), but hopefully you've seen me. I am a short woman, have a brown ponytail, and ride with a blue camelbak.

When did your son ride the velodrome? I raced there from 1993 to 1996
btw. do you remember Mariano Friedick? He was a junior then and just mopping up the field each race. He would finish 1/2 lap or more ahead of the field. Phenomenal rider. |

1989. He was 8. He was just taking classes and practice runs. Too young to compete, Actually, too young to take classes as you were supposed to be 10. Rick let him in though. But, it was a real struggle for him to keep up in the pacelines of the 14 year olds. He did get great experience from it all though.

Yes I remember him. He was a cat2 by the time I started racing (1993) and was still pretty fast. Nice guy too, always willing to chat with us juniors and give us advice. Also, I'm assuming you're referring to Rick Denmon? I often wonder what happened to a lot of the guys who were so friendly back then.
I think Mariano is with Rock Racing now. He was with Toyota United last year. http://www.cyclingnews.com/photos.ph...066/sw06-WP_08 |
