Hey, thanks, I didn't even know about it...

The Orange Line Bike Path is probably the best answer, but I also would not be concerned taking Burbank all the way. You'll have traffic, but the neighborhoods are fine.

The intersection of Burbank and Sepulveda is very dangerous on a bicycle.

bhop 07-18-08 09:56 AM

Do you guys know if the orange line path is open after dark?

zzzwillzzz 07-18-08 02:38 PM

the path is well lit in most places. the only place it's dark is along victory blvd through the sepulveda basin where the path is stupid and twisty like the santa monica/venice bike path

Thanks for the info. I don't mind twisty too much.. I have a headlight, so it sounds like a good way to get to my friend's place.. guess i'll find out Sunday.

urbanknight 07-18-08 03:23 PM

Be careful on the dark, twisty part. There's a lot of debris after windy days, and there are some spots of broken pavement here and there.

bhop 07-21-08 12:11 AM

Just an update.. I rode that Orange Line path today to my friend's place. It was a pretty easy ride. It was a little sketchy after dark in some spots because my headlight's not really bright enough, but It worked out great. Thanks for letting me know about it.

The orange line bikeway is definitely the way to go if you're traveling distances east/west through the valley. You do hit a lot of lights, but really no more than if you were on the road. And some intersections are lightly traveled by cars ( *wink* ).

I ride from Hazeltine to Balboa Park, around the park a couple of times, and back again, most evenings after dark; never earlier than 9:30, and sometimes as late as midnight. The route is safe after dark, as long as you keep moving. There is the occasional homeless person nesting in the bushes along the way, and between Van Nuys and Kester I am sure I've ridden past a few drug deals, but what are you going to do? It's LA. Just keep pedaling. People can't be bothered with you if you're moving at 18-22mph. They can't keep up with their knobby-tire Walmart bikes anyway.

I've been thinking of trying the orange line path to ride burbank to calabasas, but how do you get from pierce college to valley circle?

urbanknight 07-21-08 09:08 PM

I would just take Victory to Platt to Valley Circle. If you want to avoid the traffic on Victory, take Winnetka, Wells, Dumetz, Don Pio, and San Luis.

Cool, thanks!

Paul, you revived the thread! I don't know about next week yet, but that ride is a possibility. I'll send out some e-mails.
Valleygirl is on the mend from a broken collar bone, Cassave only rides with us rarely, but Stan still comes out.
I'll let you know what's up.

I think he's in the witness protection program.

vertical bob 04-12-09 09:05 PM

A few of us are going out to Valyermo where Sarah is racing at the Devils Punchbowl on Saturday. We are doing a ride up Big Pines Hwy to Angeles Crest. Last year we rode over the the washout. This year it will to the new bridge. I can see the possibility of going on over to Wrightwood from there. It kinda depends when the Women's race is .

AkAk2000 04-12-09 11:02 PM

What happened to Cassave/Steve? He was one of the steady regulars. Of all the SFVBC rides I've done (well, admittedly, no more than half a dozen), he's been on nearly every one. Always riding 100 yards ahead of the pack.

He's been busy fixing up a house in Lake Hughes and taking care of other family issues. He still rides to work and gets plenty of miles in. When he does show up he's still fast.
He wasn't a long time club member, anyway. I think he found our club through BF.

Oh no..what happend to VG?

John,

Bikesnobnyc has called you out:
At this point you may argue that nicknames need to be earned, and that Tornado Tom is only Tornado Tom because he's already "stormed to victory" a bunch of times. This is ridiculous. A professional bike racer should be given every advantage possible. Does Hincapie's team make him ride a crappy bike just because he hasn't won Paris-Roubaix yet? Of course not--he's given the best equipment to which the team has access. So why couldn't his team give him an awesome nickname too? The only nickname I ever hear for Hincapie is "Big George," and putting "Big" before a person's name is the lamest, most rudimentary form of nicknaming there is. It's like repairing a bike frame by wrapping duct tape around it. So since this is possibly the bell lap of Hincapie's Roubaix career, it's essential that his team provide him with a professional-level nickname before that metaphorical final sprint next year.
I nominate "Stachetastic J" for your new sobriquet. The floor is open for further suggestions.

She was in the Bay area visiting her brother and she crashed on a bike path on a wet bridge. She broke the collar bone and badly bruised her hip. Last I heard the hip is O.K. and she has been hiking but I don't think she has been on the bike yet.

I didn't create the nickname, it was given to me by the road club years ago. Where is this posted?

Looking at the description of my big fall, it sounds so lame. And it was one of the safest rides I have ever done. After all the years and thousands of miles I have put on my bike, I'm taken down by a patch of slippery moss . I'm kind of freaked about getting on the bike again, my shoulder still hurts and it is taking an extra long time to heal.
