Depends if you like strict traditional or more modern fancy stuff. I say this because there are many places in the SD area that are sushi places, but go over board on creativity into plain weirdness. I like the Sushiya chain. High quality for a good price. My favorite is Akita, just across town from me in Escondido, or Katsu in San Marcos. There are some excellent places in the downtown gaslamp area and Hillcrest/Northpark areas, but be prepared for a large bill and a long wait, especially on a Friday or Saturday night.

Robert.... Probably more of the modern type.

There are Sushi Ota and Surfside Sushi mid-town area; there's also Kaito in Encinitas. If you can read Japanese and don't mind paying over $100 per person excluding alcohol, then Shirahama on Convoy. These are the fancier traditional sushi type places; which you normally don't go for California rolls, etc. Even if they serve it there, it will be too expensive.
For all-you-can-eat, Tadashi Sushi in La Jolla Cove is nice.

If you get up to North County, I like Harney Sushi near the Oceanside Pier. https://www.harneysushi.com/

If they are turning away paying customers because they don't speak Japanese, then you're better off staying away anyways - because serving food isn't exactly their specialty, if you get my drift.

That restaurant is a sushi bar. No photos, no English, and if I remembered it correctly not even price. I went there with a friend hoping to try it out for lunch, but had to leave because we didn't know how or what to order. From what I heard though, they are very good.

My favorite is Poway Sushi Lounge in Poway (go figure), this is actually where a lot of the Chargers and Padres go and I'm guessing they could afford a lot better sushi than me...
The other place I've heard a LOT about is Sushi on the Rock in La Jolla....

In my Uptown neighborhood "Zensei," an unfortunate pun on "Sensei," the Japanese word for teacher or master. Beautifully fresh maguro and hamachi, great ama ebi, and the Spanish mackerel when they have it is wonderful. George is the charming chef and master of ceremonies. Located at 30th & Upas St. on the Great Hipster Silk Road.
In Kearny Mesa, "Katzra," and on the Coast Highway in Solana Beach is "Nobu," formerly of "Samurai," also in Solana Beach at I-5 & Lomas Santa Fe Drive.

For sushi with lots of added flavors/dressings...Sushi on the Rock or Poway Sushi Lounge. For good sushi at a reasonable cost go to any of the Sushi Deli's around San Diego. Also, the mention of Harney Sushi is a good one and the location on Harney in OLd Town is small but nice (and closer to San Diego). Sushi Ota is also excellent in PB area (always ranks high in ratings).

Both excellent places. My first experiences with sushi were at (what i think is) the original Harney Sushi on Harney Street in Old Town. Love that place. Coincidentally, during my first years of college that was one of the many joints that didn't check I.D.'s, so maybe my opinion is misleading!

I just got back from a fantastic meal at Umi Sushi on Shelter Island.

Thanks again for all the great info here. We will have 4 days in SD before we head up north so it sounds like we will need to try more than a few places

Kaito sushi in Encinitas is the best. https://www.yelp.com/biz/kaito-sushi-encinitas
Bit of a drive from downtown though.
