Single speed chain for sycnh

Anyone know if single speed chain will work OK for the timing or "synch" chain on a tandem? Logic says yes, but I'm wondering about caveats.

Thanks-

Rick

Yes, but I'm not sure there's much added value and you'd need to carry spare 1/8" chain segments and a couple 1/8" master links in the event you damaged the thing as you wouldn't be able to steal any links from your drive-side chain. Of course, the same problem exists if you mix and match 8 and 9 speed chains.

Are you just looking to "beef up" your timing chain on the Ventana or are you running fairly large timing rings that place the timing chain "in harms way" when you're crossing obstacles or dropping off of steep berms?

I was mostly considering economical alternatives to using $40.00 worth of 9-sp chain to replace a synch chain. I hadn't considered the possibility of borrowing for repairs, and I probably should have mentioned that it was for road use. I've never trashed a synch chain on the road, but I have destroyed the primary chain. On the other hand, after owning an off road tandem for a short time, I can see how damage to the synch chain might be a concern.

Again, it will work but if economy is what you're after why not just use the KMC 3/32" Z610 chains instead of the 1/8" Z1? Same price, same chrome finish, just as durable, but a little lighter and a better fit on the chainrings. I think they sell for around $9 - $12 ea. and you can get two sync chains out of three 118 link chains. However, be mindful that these types of chains tend to generate more noise than the better, lightweight 8 & 9 speed models.

Sync chains aren't fancy, just about any chain will work.

From: 6 miles inland from the coast of Sussex, in the South East of England

Bikes: Dale MT2000. Bianchi FS920 Kona Explosif. Giant TCR C. Boreas Ignis. Pinarello Fp Uno.

I changed the synch chain after 3 years offroad use because I thought it would need it. It didn't, and it sits in the spares box as a spare. Don't think I will ever use it. The replacement chain has been on for 2 years and other than the initial stretch that came in- I have yet to adjust the concentric to take out any slack. Now both chains were good quality XT grade and not a cheap one.

I do not want to run down cheap chains but I know that mentally- I will go for a grade that I trust and not one that I do not know the quality of.
