According to Gus Riley, Talamena is 3.7 miles (or 70% longer) and 2.2 for Vesuvius.

His map of Talimena includes about a mile of flat road before the steep drop. Comparing only the steepest parts of both rides, I came up with the distances and elevation changes. They aren't as dissimilar as Gus Riley is making them out to be.

Overall the point is that I, personally, wouldn't worry about brake performance on such a short steep run. I don't worry about brakes on other routes I've ridden that require far more braking (check my corrected link to Saxon Mountain). Overheated brakes are just not something that I worry about on any downhill whether on- or off-road. I don't brake in a manner whether using hub mounted discs or rim brakes that overheat my brakes.

I have tried not to game this debate, cyccomute's own depiction of the Visuvius descent added at least 3 miles of flats...two towns were included within his depiction. And he gripes about one mile I left on his. I tried only to start Talimena where he did in his. I shortened the bottom, not the top. My intention was to show only the area where brakes were needed...the descents themselves.

Here it is again, I took the top off, it still does not compare. All that needs done to see this is to run the curser along the lower graph and read the grades. There is a world of difference. His average grade is 8.7%, that does not compare with 11.1%. His max grade remains the same at 14.7% on a straight away. That does not compare to a 20.6% max grade which goes around a switchback. I might add that most of the switchbacks on this section have some loose gravel kicked up on them from cars hitting the shoulders. Forty mph around them is impossible.

This is posted in the "Ride With GPS" program that cyccomute provided (I do like it better than "MAPMYIDE", thanks cyccomute).

That facts should speak for themselves. If not, go ride the damn thing, but do be careful.

after looking all day for photos of Interbike I found one of the front fork of the Surly Disc LHT, also surly updated there website with specs for more bikes(no photo on the surly site yet). Just a little bit of leg to show for now. More if I find some, or if anyone else has them.

disc brakes

I don't want anything that I can't repair with minimal tools--$20 worth of parts and a wrench (allen), and I can rebuild my V brakes completely. No thanks. I have descended Mt. Mitchell, back in the old days, and New Found Gap to Cherokee several times and have had no problem with overheating rims.

I'd prefer they stick with the LHT TT decal, or better yet, no decals at all.

Also, I don't care for that green color. I was hoping for more of a "british racing' green.

Green nashbar touring frame is awesome color.
Stop whining over disc brakes. You guys act as if they discontinued the non disc version in favor of disc. That's not the case. They are offering another option that many of us want.

I like the rear dropouts. I'm surprised they just tacked an iso mount to the existing fork. That's a flexible fork even with rim brakes. I wonder about the cable routing for the rear disc. Guess we'll have to wait for official Surly pics.

Yes, it is. My neighbor's had one for 5 years now. Maybe Surly should subcontract powdercoat selection to Nashbar.

The NTF is quite a deal. You can get it for 20% of at times, making the delivered cost along with the optional fork <$150.

Surly stickers peel right off. And your local powdercoater would be happy to make your frame whatever color you prefer, for less than $100. And, as motebecane69 notes, people who don't like disk brakes can simply buy the one that doesn't have them.

IOW, I am at a total loss to understand the venom this thing has inspired.

All of the powder coat places in my area have a $150 minimum! And they charge extra for special-order colors

This is not true in my experience. It was very difficult to remove decals from a 2006 LHT, without damaging the underlying powdercoat. I removed all 8 decals, and not a single one peeled right off. They came off in numerous small pieces, only after a lot of scrapping with a plastic-edged tool, or my fingernails. Metal edges are too hard, they will gouge the soft powdercoat. The decals were largely impervious to gasoline, paint thinner, adhesive remover, and acetone. I had to scrape and buff those suckers off, and it took hours. I have removed decals from other bikes - some came off easily, others not at all. The decals on my Litespeed dissolved in seconds with a few wipes of acetone on a cloth. The Surly was a real chore.

I agree, it is. But I'm glad to see the new disc-compatible fork has a lugged crown, and I kind of like the dark green color. Thanks to all who've posted links and pics of the new bike; all-in-all, a nice looking frame and fork IMO.

The green is not so gray, look at the surly website. It looks darker there, the photos from interbike so far are over lit/ over exposed photos of the bike, the blue velvet looks so different in the photos when it came out then what I have now.

Normally shops will charge more to remove power coat, because it's more durable(its harder to remove)

This might not be the final product; Surly hasn't posted official photos on there sites. I figure there are some little changes they might do. The non-drive side seat stay has the spoke holder; I figured they would do that. With the Disc Trucker, it looks like it will be easier to mount fenders on. My brakes got in the way when I first put my fenders on, do to to the cables.

Do you have any actual experience with Avid BB7 road disc brakes? They are easier to adjust than V brakes (and magnitudes easier than cantilevers) and it's much quicker to change out the pads. There's really nothing all that complicated about them. They use the same cables as rim brakes. I'm not sure what you mean by "rebuild". If you're just talking about changing pads and cables, then it will take about the same amount of money and tools although there are more cheap options for rim brake pads.
