Okay that one was just torture.

I fear what the Bike Snob blog guy would do if forwarded the second link. He loves those smug hipster types. Thank heaven these guys have made it possible for me to enjoy the outdoors; I feared to venture there without dragging a solar powered boat anchor behind me.

The group has a seriously kick-butt business plan. I hope there is a huge public liability insurance component built into it. The trouble with this is that the first wind gust of, oh, let's say, 15mph, is going to cause havoc with the van and the resultant mayhem for the rider. Getting passed by a semi-trailer will be interesting, to say the least.

I built a two-wheel trailer that was long enough for a person to lie down on, and it was lightweight (built mainly of aluminium security screen) so it could be towed behind a bike easily. It handled well in all conditions. The maximum load on it was made up of two large lounge chairs, and the boxes full of clothes (large carton) and books (smaller cartons) shown in the picture.

With a bit of effort I could have made it into a camp trailer with an easy-to-erect soft shell, and it sure would have carried all my camping supplies.

But then I'd have to ask myself the question: Why?

It would have been as much effort as putting up a tent, and more than putting up a hammock (if I was that way inclined). It would have just rearranged the effort to set up camp.

Your right that's why i am taking the generator to motor approach,theirs no reason to haul the battery if i can get power directly from the generator to a 36v 600w converter,put a switch in the handlebar and i have power,i will put a kill switch just in case.

Somebody spoke of a small gas engine,illegal in NY and to much noise,about the brakes of course i am planning to put either disc or hub brakes.

I own a Honda eu1000i they are really quiet,found a guy who made a box for it,install intake grill with a hose and 12v fan in front and some kind of heat resistant fan for the exhaust to exit under the trailer.

Yeah, that UFO is too caught up in the look. Leaf springs on a camper! But the idea, is the same one a lot of people have had. I had the exact same genesis, pulling a trailer, then I though, why couldn't it be a camper. Brad at Atomic Zombie started a tandem project. That guy is smart and gets a lot done, though I don't think he got this one done.

It is like Gossamer Albatross, not really practical, but it will keep getting re-invented until someone cracks it.

You might doublecheck NY's policies on small gas engines. Most states allow them up to a certain size (typically 49 or 50cc), horsepower (1.5 brake), vehicle speed (sustained 20mph for example), etc., as long as they can be pedaled. There are different classes, and some are less regulated (helmets, insurance, registrations, etc.). I have heard stories about (and had my own experiences with some) cops, DMV employees, shop owners, and even judges who do not understand the exact details of these laws, so you have to do a little careful sifting or digging sometimes to get at the truth.

Honda generator engines are quiet, as you have seen. The same engines can, I was told, be purchased separately. They are potentially just as quiet, or quieter (since the electricity-generating components are absent).

Not so.

The problem with these trailers that look like iconic camper models, is campers are designed to be walked around in. The shape does not transfer to a bike trailer.

I have a really crazy idea that would really set people off, but I am going to wait until I make it, or I will shut up about it.

I think putting a 3-6 man lightweight tent on a bike trailer makes more sense

then i'll tell ya 'bout my plan to spread the frame and forks of my mountain bike to
accept 16" automobile rims. why? cause ya never know when you'll be touring in
arkansas and blow out your wheel, and then you can pick up a cheap spare pinto
wheel from a car wrecker.

and before you critics start criticizing, i realize the bottom bracket will
drag, so i'll have to weld some cast-iron stilts to the drop outs to
improve the ground clearance.

stop criticizing! i'm aware that the tires will be difficult to pump up with
a frame pump. that's why i'm carrying a generator and air compressor
on the trailer.

Mmmmmm gallo pinto, now I'm hungry.
