frameset to bike how to build
Whats the best utube or vimeo video for building up bike just bought the thorn audax 853
frameset
if its delivered tomorrow i think i might start building it up.
i know how to do it but i just want to see how the experts go about it.

I would work with a local bike shop. It's unlikely you will have the tools to instal critical parts, and buying every tool will cost more than having a pro do it for you.

antokelly, Whether it's a bicycle, house or a car the most important part is the planning. Knowing everything that the frame(set) will require to achieve your goal, including specialist tasks such as wheel building, facing/chasing the BB and facing the HT. youtube can help, but if there's one in your area, a bike co-op would be better, if only to re enforce a video.

It's Thorns hand made Audax 853
really beautifull frameset made in england,it would have been treated inside the frame for inner rust.i bought it from a lad on the thorn forum like spanking new,pity i cant post photos...thanks anyway folks just though you would have a favourate video on builds not to worry i still need a few parts to get her on the road so no hurry.

Get some framesaver and spray it inside all the tubes following the directions. I then took my frame to my lbs who checked it for alignment, faced the head tube and bottom bracket shell and chased all the threads. They also pressed in the headset cups even though I had the capability to do that. I built the bike from that point on.

Just start doing it. Getting stuff done in the correct order is nothing to worry about, if you do something stupid, you will figure it out soon enough. It is a good learning experience to get things a bit out of order.
But, three suggestions:
- If you cut the steerer, do not cut it too short, leave it longer at first because you can always cut it again later. My LHT and Thorn Sherpa have original steerer tube lengths, although the Sherpa might have been cut by the previous owner since I bought that frame used. My Nomad, I wanted that steerer cut down shorter but I intentionally cut it long, then cut it again, then a couple months later did the final cut. Cutting it 3 times is a little more effort but you won't accidently cut it too long that way.
- I ride a new build for a week just using strapping tape to hold the cables to the handle bars. Then after a week when I am certain that brake levers are exactly where I want them on the handlebars, that is when I put the handlebar tape on.
- Use blue locktite on all rack bolts. If you use a kickstand, also put locktite on those bolts Other bolts like water bottle bolts, etc., a little dab of grease on the bolt first makes it less likely that the bolt will vibrate and fall out.
Photo shows my Sherpa stem on my uncut steerer. Note that I have the stem inverted.

If yours was made in the UK, it is several years old. Both of my Thorns were welded in Taiwan.
I did the Frame Saver thing with my Nomad, but the previous owner of my Sherpa did the Frame Saver treatment so I did not bother.
I assume it has the headset already installed, if not you might want to have a bike shop install that.

theres a UK touring bike, resold , in the shop, Here, I guessed there is a Bottle dynamo bracket to use that ,

Cool, looks like it could also be another place to put a battery light , on a tube conversion to fit battery lights.
I have a braze on , on the hoop of my Low rider rack with a widget PaulsComp makes. for the summer just in case light.

i had a simular fitting made (PAUL) for my sherpa,made from stainless held 2 battery lights worked great.
great bike the sherpa bit overkill for my type of touring,thats the reason i went for the new audax going as light as possible.

Well my lovely new Thorn Audax is now built up not quiet finished just need to change brake calibers for longer reack ones my campag are to short which means i can still stop but cant fit rack or mudguards brake arm gets in the way.
anyway its a cracking bike hopefully this will do me fine for all my touring .sorry i have no ideas how to post photos but theres plenty of photoson my facebook page and thorn forum.
